Reeks of fish! If you are smell sensitive, get the 4-4-4 instead
I'm a big fan of this brand as this is my third purchase of their fertilizer. Coincidentally, I moved to use their 4-4-4 because Espoma's Garden Tone's smell just...I can use it, but even as the bag sits there it's strong. Now, this Down to Earth 4-6-2 smells so heavy of fish, they should have a fish on the box, not a tomato. I wore gloves and had to wash my hands twice to get that smell off. I didn't notice it at first opening the box, but now that it's wet and in the soil...man. Ugh. I'm a pragmatic person, so I'm not going to throw it out, but the famine is going to have to set in before I open that box again. From here on out, it's bone meal 4-4-4 mix for my early fruiting plants, and bone meal for my mature ones. They've been doing just fine without 4-6-2. I tried it as an experiment with my second set of tomatoes and peppers. ...no more. What I don't get is that the ingredients for both are the same. The only thing different with the 4-6-2 is it mentions ALSO CONTAINS NON-PLANT FOOD INGREDIENTS. Maybe that's what I'm picking up on, but I can't hang. My plants still smell like fresh garbage, like unprocessed compost or something. The brand is great, but if you are sensitive to heavy fertilizer and fish smells, don't spend your money on this one, maybe get their 4-4-4 or something else.
