Great camera, superb viewfinder
I love the camera and especially the EVF, what a big, clear/sharp viewfinder. This thing has more features than I'll ever use, and wading through the menus can be a little tedious; but that's just how this and other cameras work these days. Autofocus is lightning-quick, and the modes are great and easy to pick in the quick menu. Buttons and knobs are in the right place, although it's tough to remember what all of them do if I haven't used the camera recently. An idiosyncrasy is the faint little noise coming from the lens whenever the camera is powered on. I've learned that it's the lens motor, normal operation. Slightly annoying. My one gripe is that the FZ1000 has no way to charge the battery in-camera, unlike all my other point/shoot cameras. You actually have to remove the battery and charge it in a charger. Rats, what an inconvenience. I knocked off one star for this, which is probably a little unfair, but really Panasonic? The USB connector is there, why not an internal charger?

Despite its age, a great camera for the money
This is a great camera that is extremely affordable. It takes sharp photos, and it's packed with features. The only issue with it, frankly, is the existence of a successor... The FZ1000 II. And the truth is, it's a tough call whether the newer version is worth it. That's because both cameras share the exact same sensor and lens, so image quality is identical. It really depends on your budget, but either of the options including this one get you more camera for the money than what Sony offers.
