The leather has an almost plastic like shine to it, and the chemical smell is quite significant. Treating this shoe first with a vigorous application of saddle soap followed by multiple applications of mink oil with heat make these shoes darken up and lose a bit of their plastic luster. They are also pretty stiff in the ankle and require some breaking in. The addition of mink oil will also reduce the amount of scratching that other reviewers have experienced.These shoes are definitely a pair that you don't mind getting beat up. The Cognac color is more suited to a navy suit, but darkening the leather with mink oil will make them appropriate for a lighter charcoal suit.For the price I would say they are alright if you can get them below $65.
