The Routledge Advanced Chinese Multimedia Course: Crossing Cultural Boundaries, 2nd Edition

The Routledge Advanced Chinese Multimedia Course is an excellent textbook for advanced Chinese. I began teaching myself Chinese about 7 months ago, and this is one of the textbooks I have used. After comparing this textbook to other Advanced Chinese textbooks, I have concluded that this book is outstanding. I enjoyed the reading comprehension passages, whose themes I found very interesting and relevant. The grammar and vocabulary sections were also of a high standard. This book surpassed my expectations, and as such I am giving it five stars. The accompanying videos are fascinating, though the speed of some of the speakers was a little too advanced. All in all, this is a fine book. It is very obvious from reading this book that the authors know how to teach material in a manner that is ideal for the student's comprehension. I am very happy that I got this textbook, and I have benefited greatly from its lucid content.

I loved this book - the topics included and the content. However, beyond a point, not very useful for self-learners like me. I would prefer if they could include answers to the exercises in the textbook or open up the currently restricted "Instructor resources". Hence, beyond a point one feels stifled as if the knowledge is available but accessible only to a select few. Something to consider if they want this book to be widely used.

Is a great and promising book throughout, when looked at in preview. However, I bought the Kindle version (which btw is more expensive than paperback). The page formatting is awful and impractical. Furthermore, it does not allow highlighting individual Chinese words to look up in Kindle dictionary (highlights whole sentences and does not allow minimize). Audio files from the CDs are not included either.

This is a great book for intermediate learners of Mandarin who are looking to get to the next stage. The book is demanding, of course, and it is time-consuming too. But the materials - dialogues, films and articles - are fresh and stimulating, and they give a thorough overview of China today and in the past. A book I have read again and again.

Had to buy it as part of my course, but find it not particularly engaging or helpful in learning Chinese.

great book for those learning advanced Chinese. comes with CD which is a useful learning tool that helps compliment the book nicely

I have had to order this book three times because the first two copy I ordered had pages mixed with another book and the second had all the pages in the wrong order. I think Routledge must be having an issue with their printing.
