Needs instructions; includes strange Harry Potter references; looks great
UPDATE: After nearly completing it, I have more respect for the work that went into this. There are only one or two areas that haven’t peeled off as they should, but for the most part the castle looks incredible. It’s really cool seeing this unfold over time. It’s made for some great conversations, and I highly recommend it. I got this for my parents, so I was able to see the product through their eyes - with absolutely no idea what to expect. The first thing I noticed was how well-packaged it is. After opening the box, the actual calendar itself is very nicely presented. It comes in an acrylic container which acts as a dust cover for when the project is completed; and it has a solid plastic base, which holds the batteries that power the LEDs. This was my first surprise. I assumed the product images were exaggerated, like many product images are on Amazon, but no! This is actually a lit model by the time it will be finished! The second thing I noticed was that there are absolutely no instructions whatsoever. I thought it would be pretty simple, but upon examination there were confusing aspects to the calendar. We could see perforated lines, small unrelated shapes, and a suspicious order to the arrangement of pages that didn’t quite make sense. The only kind of instructional imagery is a pair of images on one of the disposable pages. It instructed us to tear the pages OUT, not UP. Other than that, we were on our own. After tearing off the first couple of white pages, we came to our first blue page. It had a distinctly different silhouette than the pages before it. This made me think about the perforations (or fold lines) on each page. Were we supposed to BUILD parts of the castle using the discarded pages? Since it’s April now, we had four months to get through before we were caught up. I wish they’d just used standard days, but I’m sure there’s probably a sensible design reason why they went with weeks. Still, it just adds to the confusion at first. This is when my dad noticed a cutout of a bicycle along one of the discarded pages’ perforation line. Why would there be a cutout of a bicycle? Another page had what looked to be a cutout of a witche’s hat. And another had an owl. Then we found another bicycle cutout - but this is when I noticed the lightening bolt and I realized what they’d done. This was a cheap Harry Potter reference! I never thought of Hogwarts - not for even one moment - while deciding whether to get this calendar, and frankly, I think it’s a shame the manufacturer decided to shoehorn these references into their product. This is what gives cheap Chinese knock-offs their name. This company has absolutely no affiliation with the Harry Potter brand, but they’re blatantly using these images to make it seem like they do. But why? Why does this have to resemble Hogwarts? Why can’t it just be a generic fantasy castle? After all, no one will even know about the HP references until after purchasing it. It’s not like these things are obvious in the marketing, so they aren’t influencing purchases. So, what’s the point? All it does is point out how they’re NOT affiliated with HP in any way, making their product seem inferior by nature. Idk. It’s just silly. And the cutouts serve no purpose to the final model. After a while it became clear that the perforations, or fold lines, like the HP iconography, serve no purpose. And as far as I can tell, there is no need to save the pages. I don’t know why some of the pages have a totally different silhouette than their neighbors, but it may have something to do with the way the laser cut the paper. Some of the smaller pieces (several “K’s” for instance) came loose and are clearly missing, but it won’t matter much because those pages will be discarded eventually anyway. Overall I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I’d really only recommend this if you want to give someone in your family something to do to keep them occupied for a short time every day. The format doesn’t make sense for use in an office - where knowing the date would be most important (not which week of the year it is) - and it’s not exciting enough for children to enjoy. One page a week means it’s easy to forget to rip your page, rendering the whole thing kind of pointless. Calendars like this can be used to teach kids good habits like responsibility and patience, but that only works if they practice it daily. This simply wouldn’t work for a weekly calendar. Finally, while the overall presentation is fantastic, I just can’t get over the shameless attempts at appearing somehow related to the Harry Potter brand. It’s not. Not in any way. In my opinion it’s about as close to intellectual property theft as you can get without actually going so far. This calendar model seems like a good proof of concept, but it needs work before it would feel like a finished product. That said, if you’re even a little curious about it, or you or someone you know likes puzzles, this would make a great gift. If only because there’s nothing else quite like it (that I’ve seen, anyway), and it’s at least fun trying to figure it out at first.

The anticipation is killing me!
Slowly! So slowly! The image comes into view a fraction at a time each week. I love watching it develop! Beautifully made and solid construction. It handles being moved around on my desk with no problem, taunting me with another bit of the view next week.

Magical, Beautiful, and Useful
I can't express to you how freaking cute this is! This comes nicely packaged in a red gift box that's wrapped in plastic indicating it's new and sealed, so it would make a wonderful gift. The calendar itself comes in an acrylic box as well, I'm assuming to put your finished castle in when the year is over and use as decoration without it getting too dusty. That aside, each week is a sheet. There are some filler pages too but every now and then there are cute cutouts like a broom, the Sorting Hat, the glasses and scar, an owl, etc (see images). These little cutouts are so cute that I actually cut out two of them and put the owl on my desk and the glasses and scar in my bookshelves (again, see images). I like that the week is laid out in front of me, I can make little marks or tiny notes if need be and there's room above the calendar to write too (the whole thing comes out at the end of the week). You pull the sheet out rather than ripping it (there's a little picture that explains). It almost slides out rather than pulls out. The sheets have a little perforation. What I've done is kept the blank pieces for little notes and stuff, even bookmarks (because they're like cardstock) and recycle the rest. I obviously can't attest to the actual castle at the end, but the calendar itself is so thoughtfully made that I'm happy already and the price ($10 at the time of this review) is unbeatable compared to similar items I've seen. I love that there is also the added light and replaceable batteries. A great gift for anyone, but especially those who love magic and wizards (one wizard in particular haha). What a lovely way to celebrate or take note of the passing of time and just a cute thing to have on your desk.
