It might clean grouting but it is really a brush for cleaning hands and finger nails after dirty jobs. A specified grout brush which is the correct shape for scrubbing along the line of the grouting would probably work better.

what are the bristles made of?

The bristles are plastic and really hard wearing but without being harsh on the nails/hands. I used to have to buy a new one of the type you get in the supermarket every 6 weeks and my husband is a contact lense wearer and is fastidious with his hands. He's been using this one for the last 4 months and it is still like new. I'd highly highly recommend it.
