Sure enough, my child started up...and I was relieved to know that I wasn't unprepared for anything. Being early, I got the small fearing I'd need a large...but they started at ten, so...If your person is a 12-14 year old, i'd go more for the large, unless they're of smaller build. You get a book, so if kiddo doesn't want to have THAT conversation, there is a book so you can breathe a little easier...assuming they wanna read it. The heart heat pad was a beautiful thing until I could get youth midol. The bag allows for privacy, especially for school backpacks. We did not use the pads or the scented bags as we use reusables, so I can't comment. But everything else made this first cycle so much easier than in my day. Especially that it had the underwear.
