It took me a minute to make up my mind on this due to all the one stars. So I decided to take a chance and go from there. Honestly, yes, it is flimsy, yes, it's cheaply made, yada, yada, yada! But I gave it a 5 star because of all the flimsy, cheap bookcases you could buy, this was the best of them. Now granted, it's not going to hold a lot of weight so choose accordingly to your needs. This works perfect for me. Easy to assemble, not a bad looking organizer and less than $20. However, I would not pay anymore for this item. If I need another one of these in the future, I will buy this again. As long as the price was the same. Thanks for reading my review. Update: When I purchased this, it was like $19, and I was going to purchase another one but for some reason the price had gone up to $42. I still stand by my original review however I will not pay $42 for this. I loved it at $19 but not at $42. 😊

Update: Go ahead and buy this unit. Just understand the quality and only attempt something that stresses it once all boards are fully assembled on a horizontal surface and screwed in. I should have known something was up when the package showed up marked as Fragile! :) I changed this review from 1 to 5 because the customer service people at Whitmor are actual humans who want to give the customer a good experience. They were understanding of my situation in this exact case and also that the instructions didn't make it clear that the thing needs to make it past step 6 (screws in the side boards) before it can be moved. In this instance, I didn't have enough space and had to move it before the critical "screws" step. The dowels are apparently just there to somewhat hold things in place till the screws anchor it all Only the vertical side boards (same material) are intended to take the distributed weight of the unit. Every force must only be straight down. For example, even with it glued, there is no chance of it withstanding a lateral force. In the end, we agreed both parties could have done better. They let me keep the somewhat mangled one and sent me a new one. I can use them for light weight storage where they won't be bumped by anything. I'm happy with the compromise. ------------ Original: —-------- The panel board needs to be much thicker and higher quality. The unit barely stands up to its own weight. The dowels provided are too short and not large enough in diameter for the task. However, the holes drilled are large enough such that there is wobble and only about 2-3mm of particle board supporting the dowels. Also, the particle board looks more like a sponge than wood. To top that off, it seems the varying position of the pre-drilled holes side-to-side on the panel boards also applies to the angle the holes are drilled. It seems they used the hole to dowel size difference to handle the horrible drilling tolerances. The unit collapsed, breaking nearly every dowel, the first time I tried to move it to put the “top” on. Re-drilling holes, and using glue to fix all the places the dowels broke through the panel boards is a nightmare. If this shelf ever gets together, it will be a slanted eyesore that can only hold about 1lb per “box”. I never expect Whitmor to be great quality, but they do tend to make it to the assembled state before falling apart.

Nice color and size

These are perfectly fine bookcases. Yes, they're particle board (with the typical, flimsy, super-heavy-bond-paper backing that you nail into place), but they feel sturdy enough for all reasonable applications. They have fittings for stacking one atop the other, but the end result of that would be so tall and skinny that I'd be super nervous. Assembly took longer than I expected - maybe about 30 minutes for the first one? And 25 minutes for the second?

I'm writing this review after comparing them with a comparable priced white 9-cube organizer from another company. I had ordered two but ended up needing four, and because these shelves were out of stock and I was in a hurry, I found another cube organizer and ordered two of them. Put succinctly, when compared with the other company's similar product, these organizers are kind of awful. First, one box I received was obviously a return, as the packaging was a mess and there was a wooden dowel broken off in one of the holes. The white laminate was paper-like and tore/scuffed off very easily. The particleboard split at the drop of a hat. The directions were not good, although not the worst I have seen. These were much harder to put together solo than the other company's. I had to use a lot of painter's tape to hold pieces in place as I worked. After all of the screws were put into place, its stability was adequate but not as good as the other's. The most frustrating aspect of this product was that the backs of the shelves had ugly exposed particleboard instead of a covering. This was problematic for me because I have them placed where both sides are visible. The other product I subsequently bought (again, virtually the same price) was covered on both sides by laminate that wasn't easy to mar. I can't return these now that I've assembled them, but they are going into a closet where their bad looks won't matter as much, and am replacing them with more of the other company's product.

The tiny dowels they give you aren’t stable. Be careful to ensure you build it as it’s lying front down. It finally feels sturdy once you get the backs nailed on.

Love it! Purchased to organize my kids play room. Good quality + easy to assemble, to swearing putting this one together :P

I was really impressed with this item. It was well packaged, had brilliant instructions and all of the pre-drilled holes lined up. I have a phobia of flat packs but found this one pretty easy as all of the panels were labelled. It's sturdy and looks just like the photos so would definitely recommend!

Sturdy and good quality for such a great price. Looks great with the insert drawers I bought to go with it.
