why no rod?
I'm happy with my Lansky sharpening system so I expect to be happy with this but I don't understand why the extent of supply doesn't include a rod. The rod after all is an integral part of the Lansky sharpening system. I'll ponder returning this for a day or two.

Polish Up Your Sharpening Skills
I originally bought a basic Lansky setup with four hones, but have since added this ultra fine hone to the set. It definitely makes a difference to the finish of the sharpening. Work your way through the hones and finish with this one. You can easily do the hair shaving thing afterwards. Produces a mush finer finish to your edge.
