A very underrated little gem from the 1980s .Willie Nelson said this is the most autobiographical thing he's ever done. It's a fun look behind the curtains of country music then. Tour bus life. Always looking for the next big artist. Kris Kristofferson and Willie wrote a solid soundtrack. Leslie-Ann Warren and Melinda Dillon both did their own singing. Rip Torn was Rip Torn. From a clean transfer with very good audio. An enjoyable popcorn film.

A fun movie with a cute ending. Everybody wins at the end. Plus, lots of country music singing and its got Willie and Kris, the dynamic duo. 5/5

It features inspired direction by Alan Rudolph, fun performances by the entire cast, lots of terrific music and a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson are part of that rare bread of musicians who can actually act. Lesley Ann Warren is gorgeous and comes close to stealing the movie. Rip Torn and Melinda Dillon do great work as usual. There is not a weak link in the entire cast actually. You don't even have to like country music to appreciate this great film as it is a true crowd pleaser in every true sense of the word. Coming in at a tight 94 minutes, "Songwriter" is paced perfectly with helps make the humor land every single time.This classic film makes its long overdue blu-ray debut thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment. It is presented in the AVC codec in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio at a solid bit rate hovering around around the upper 20's. Detail is superb with nice color saturation, accurate flesh tones and no evidence of digital tinkering which I could see. Simply put "Songwriter" looks great in HD.Audio is in 2 channel master audio sounding punchy and clear particularly during the many musical moments. Sadly no English subtitles or extras were included. My disc came with a slipcover which mimics the look of a VHS box and tape."Songwriter" really deserves to get a special edition release at some point. But for a budget priced release going for only $8.99, fans should pick up this disc up as Mill Creek at the very least finally gets the film out in HD. The movie looks and sounds great but the lack of English subtitles and any extras at all including a trailer makes me have to deduct a star from my overall rating of this blu-ray.

Feel good, fun move! Full of great music.

It's taken me a few decades to warm up to this movie. I blame that primarily on the first act, which is not only confusing in its clipped and stepped-on dialogue and unexplained music-business jargon, but also to the fact that the major characters are presented as loutish swindlers. However, Doc Jenkins soon begins to present a subtle character arc that is only revealed after the fact, and his influence brings other characters along with him. I've also grown fonder of Willie Nelson's voice and songbook, over the years, and I really enjoyed listening to him croon. There is no doubt that this is a rat-pack style movie, with none of the actors taking it too seriously, but they turn in good performances, nonetheless.

Nothing like a story about gettin' one over the Man!

Made me wonder if they used their lives and stories with slight changes to make this. Held my interest and was entertaining enough. Hard to find any worth watching any more.

Delighted to see this great movie which is essential viewing for any fans of kris and willie. It's been many years since I last saw it. Unfortunately I found that the audio quality for a substantial amount of the first half was poor, which was very frustrating.

With a film like this you can’t go wrong it’s got two good country stars in this film what is there more to say
