Used it for many years for mouth sores and ulcers
Orabase is wonderful when you have any sort of break in the mucosa of the mouth. Plain Orabase paste (the only kind I've ever used) does not contain anesthetics or steroids; it works only as a temporary protective coating. I've found that the best way to apply it is to first dry the application area as much as possible, then dab on (not rub) a small amount of the paste. The goal is to cover the area so one can eat and drink, etc. I read a number of reviews that emphatically warned that Orabase is NOT to be used in the mouth, but instead only on the skin surrounding an ostomy (such as a colostomy). This is simply not the case, as indicated in the following: This medication is used for the temporary relief of symptoms from mouth sores due to injury. This drug comes in a dental paste that allows it to stick to the inside of the mouth/cheeks/gums. It works by reducing the swelling, itching, and pain that can occur with mouth sores. (WebMD) Orabaseยฎ paste acts as a protective covering when applied to mouth ulcers. This helps to prevent irritation from foods and drinks, and eases discomfort. A small amount of paste is dabbed on the affected area as often as needed, particularly before or after eating. (Drugs.com) Orabase Paste is a pain-relieving dental paste which helps to protect any wounds inside your mouth as they heal. Itโs also ideal for use on areas of skin surrounding a stoma, which can become irritated or damaged over time. It helps to reduce swelling and itching in the affected area and provides a protective film over the wound as it heals, helping to relieve pain. (BallyDuffPharmacy) I actually strongly suspect that Orabase was initially formulated for oral use, hence the name; then, as with many medications, products and treatments, it was found to provide additional benefits.

Yes, it does work in the mouth
As far as I can tell (I am a physician), this is the same stuff you use for oral sores. This version is marketed as a medical device (rather than medication) for skin protection, but if you look up the ConvaTec package insert online, it's probably the same as the oral version. It works quite well in the mouth, I have used on canker sores, bites to the inside of my cheek, and to protect an area of gum erosion over an area of exposed bone. It sticks better than the generic triamcinolone dental paste (Kenalog in Orabase), and is smooth rather than gritty. I can't find any good alternative, since Colgate stopped marketing their version. I have been very happy with this version so far.

The only product that works fast for me!
Canker sores are painful and I seldom get them. But I had a reaction to an antibiotic and I had several painful canker sores in my mouth. I was so grateful this shipped so fast. Orabase is a past coating that you apply over the sores and it gives immediate relief and heals sores fast.

Not a dental product per se, but it still works to keep dentures from irritating gums
WHAT IT IS: It is meant for use as a skin protectant to cover painful sores and promote healing. I've been using it to cover the gum ulcers caused from new dentures and it works just fine. My dentist even said it was ok to use it. It has no flavor, is thick but spreads easily and a little goes a long way. Since I use it beneath my lower dentures, it stays where I put it, but I cannot comment on how well it stays put in the mouth when not uncovered. WHAT IT IS NOT: As so many reviewers have mentioned multiple times, NO, this is NOT the Colgate brand Ora Base product. that was discontinued, nor does it claim to be. This products is manufactured by ConvaTec, which I believe is located in the UK- so they apparently have the trademark for the name Ora Base in that country. I don't think the manufacturers were trying to scam anyone with the name. This is NOT meant to hold your dentures in place. Don't buy it thinking it will or you will be disappointed It is also NOT a pain reliever. To my knowledge, it has no ingredients for that purpose. It's just to protect the skin from abrasion and irritation. BOTTOM LINE: I only take away one star because of the price. But given that I've found no other protective pastes that one can use in the mouth (only short term benzocaine products that don't don't last, don't stay in place and leave your next sip of tea tasting awful), I will accept the expense until my sores are gone.

Works great around stoma of feeding tube
This product is a god send for my wife. It is placed around the feeding tube as it enters her stomach. Because she has scleroderma, her body has not closed the stoma around the tube. This product fills the gap and keeps the stomach juices from leaking out. Her quality of life has improved dramatically. She now has the confidence to go out in public without the fear of an "accident".

Ghastly product
I have been buying Colgate and Walgreen Orabase for many years. I have some left in both and they are each over two years old and they are as fresh as the day they were purchased. Since I am no longer able to shop locally, I buy almost exclusively on Amazon so I bought this brand. I can almost assure you that this is not Colgate. It is made by ConvaTec and it is unusable. It is NOT a paste. I used it once and it looked and felt like petroleum jelly. It left grease all over the outside of the tube. It did not cushion the gum and relieve pain, as my previous brands did. I thought I would give it another try one week later, it was as hard as a brick. I tried putting the tube in hot water to soften it, to no avail. I tried sticking a pin down to nozzle, thinking it was clogged-no help. How could this company even put a product like this on the market? I am elderly and on a fixed income and cannot afford to throw money away. This should be removed from Amazon. It is a fraud.

So far ..ok
I can see why ppl use it as night during the day it feels like I have a tube of Vaseline on my gums. But 8 days after a 7 bottom front teeth extraction and snippet of skin for a immediate dentures that were HUGE and I could not keep in my mouth like I was supposed too I broke down and bought this. Years ago had used the Colgate one we all loved. This is not that one by any means. And I could careless what it's supposed to be used for I'm just desperate here. I'm on antibiotics, I have switched from regular salt water to fancy pink salt .salt water swishes ( I admit the fancy salt does taste better btw) and the Rx mouthwash, I've slept with oregano leaves on my gums lol I've done it all. I really feel the oral surgeon really screwed up and that immediate denture was made for a cave man not me lol So I just need to heal as fast as possible. I know it's not gonna happen over night but here on day 8 I'm gonna give using this at night from now on and will report back if it helps with over all gum healing so I can go back and beat the oral surgeon with my horse teeth immediate denture lol Meanwhile researching adding the 7 front teeth I need to my original partial denture that fits fine .. Even bought a do it yourself kit .. But we will see how talented of a crafter I really am .. May just pay a pro but then again after this blotched oral surgery.. Maybe diy is the way to go lol I'll report back if I think this whatever it is orabase stuff is helping I kinda feel like it's basically A & D ointment lol but who knows Btw the first time I put it on I didn't let it sit very long .. You do need to give it some time to kinda set.. sorta And I don't think I'd use it the first 48 hrs after extractions. Also Incase anyone else is in the botched multiple extraction.. immediate denture was made for a cave man situation I have a red and blue facial Lazer big wand thing I use for a skin condition called Hidradenitis Suppurativa or HS for short .it's sold for acne and anti aging mostly But red light Lazer therapy is starting to be found to help with all sorts of things So last night busted it out and did a 15 min red light treatment.. Did not put wand in mouth just opened mouth and held it very close and let the red light shine onto my front bottom gums .. And I think I was less swollen a bit this morning so my plan is to do that at night then pink salt swish Rx mouthwash swish and toss this oragoop lol and sleep with it.. Fingers crossed.. I just need all this swelling to go way way down .. I also bought a nail drill meant for fake nails to see if I can work with my insanely large and thick immediate denture lol No none of this is recommended by any professional I'm sure. But once again it was so called professional that screwed up in the first place So I gotta do what I gotta do to eat something I like ice cream but after 8 days I want pizza or a hamburger or something So I'm going for it! I'll be back to update!
