    A lost gem

*by F*** on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 24 October 2007*

I have always enjoyed Twiggy as a recording artist, and it's a shame that she was never taken all that seriously as a singer. However, she did have considerable success, including a top twenty hit single with a cover of Country Joe and the Fish's 'Here I Go Again' in the seventies, followed by two best-selling albums (both with a country/pop flavor) and her own one series TV variety show.'Heaven In My Eyes' was intended as Twiggy's third album, it was produced by Donna Summer and Juergen Koppe, and a record of contemporary disco/rock music. It was shelved in 1979, and only just been made available on CD. Is it good? Why yes it is!There were two potential singles with the excellent dance track 'Angels Never Sleep At Night' and 'You've Been Lying', with Twiggy's raw vocals at a peak. The artist seems right at home with 'Carries On', a country flavoured song, similar to the material she perfected on her past two albums. Another highlight out of the eight previously-unreleased tracks is 'Dorothy', a gentle ballad, and one of the less uptempo tracks. As an added treat, there are also four new remixes included as bonus tracks, especially for this nicely packaged release. Although, truth be told, these remixes don't even come close to hearing the original recordings.'Heaven in My Eyes' was mostly very different to anything the multi-talented lady had recorded before, but just goes to show what a versatile singer she is.

    not up to the job

I liked Twiggy's mid-70s country efforts and loved Donna Summer's late 70s disco adventures, so this odd mash up intrigued me. Sadly it never really delivered on its oddball promise. The biggest flaw is Twiggy's reed thin, weak voice that are not up to the thunderous dance or plodding rockier tracks. Most cry out for Summer's powerful vocals to bring them to fruition although the forgettable material feels like songs the Summer team rejected for Donna herself. The Outpsider's OTT remixes of half the tracks fare better (mainly because he's pushed the vocal even further into the background) with 'Angels Never Sleep At Night' going gloriously bonkers in places but, overall, its no real surprise this was buried in the vaults at the time and never expected to see the light of day.

    Twiggy: A Superb Singer!

I have waited twenty-eight years for this album to finally be released and it was well worth the wait! I really gave up hope I'd ever hear it at all but it was found in 2004 and now it is being released. Credit for this goes to Tim Hutton of The Official Twiggy Lawson Website. This album is a fine companion to "Midnight Blue" which highlights many of Twiggy's excellent recordings from 1982-1990. "Heaven In Your Eyes" is not a pounding Disco Album with a pulsating beat; rather it contains the music that some called Disco when it was becoming Dance music. All of the songs on this album are top-notch and Twiggy is in superb vocal form on each of them. The opening track, "You've Been Lying" is a strong belter and is among my favourites. It is more rock than disco and had this been releasedthis could have been a real hit for Twiggy. It's unlike any other song she had done up until this point. "Dorothy" is a lovely ballad followed by the uptempo "Angels Never Sleep At Night" which is a great dance numbersuperbly delivered by Twiggy. "Sugar Daddy" is another uptempo but this one reminds us when the album was recorded. It is a good song and Twiggy is in fine voice, but this track sounds like a radio track from 1979. It has aged a bit more than the other songs on this album. "lover Boy" is an excellent rock song with a stand out guitar solo. "Carries On" is a gem with a country sound and Twiggy's delivery is solid and it is a stand out track. "Heaven In Your Eyes" is a sultry and sexy song delivered with a superb delivery by Twiggy. This uptempo number is another potential hit song. It has aged extremely well! "My Baby Don't Call Me Baby" is one of my favourites though I love Twiggy's singing and I love the entire album but this one is a rock number that would have been a dance song, too. It has a hard hitting vocal delivery that, had this album been released, would have been a hit for Twiggy.Twiggy proved herself a singer in the film "The Boyfriend" and with a hit in 1976, "Here I Go Again" from her self-titled album and a second album,"Please Get My Name Right". For some reason, unbeknownst to me, her label,Mercury, didn't continue to promote her and she left them in 1978. She went onto films, TV films in which she sang (ie. "The Little Match Stick Girl") and went onto Broadway in the hit musical "My One and Only" and was nominated for a Tony as Best Actress in a musical. She returned to recording but no album deal worked out in the 80s. TV, films, and highly successful live theatre were added to her resume in "Blithe Spirit" for the National Theatre and as Gertude Lawrence in "If Love Were All" in NYC.For a model that some predicted would only last for six months, Twiggy has done it all. Staight dramatic theatre in "Mrs. Warren's Profession" and an slbum of West End musicals "London Pride". I only hope that Twiggywill return to do more recordings of pop, rock or country. Her voice would do well with English folk songs, too. For me, Twiggy may be modelingagain, but I love her most as a singer/actress and "Heaven In Your Eyes" is evidence of why Twiggy deserves much more recognition as one of Britain's finest singers. Twiggy, If you are reading this: Please do another album. You have numerous fans who'd love yet another album. In the meantime I am loving "Heaven In Your Eyes".
