A good repair manual

This book has had a lot of criticism aimed at it. However, it does give some good explantions to supplement other better 911 mainteance manauls. Best to get the Bentley Manual as your main manual - but this is useful - especially given the price.

Okay manual, focused primarily on the engine. Based on the preview of sections, I was expecting a slightly more useful section on general day to day maintenance of the car (ie general servicing, minor repairs of items that are likely to break regularly and a home mechanic might have some chance of dealing with). The photos are not great - lots of images that appear to have been photocopied several times before being inserted into the manual. This simple means it is really difficult to see the part being referenced. I've only looked in detail at the electrical section, which could be significantly better, particularly in terms of setting out the basic layout and position of relays and fuses (I've still had to search the web for help). Unfortunately this manual DOES NOT cover the Carrera 3.0 (1975 - 1977). It appears this is covered under the 930 version of the manual.

Sufficient, not very extensive.

I have been rather disappointment by this book, as it is not up to the standard I am used to with Haynes manuals. Poor quality paper, faded printing, soft cover for a start. Then, the manual does NOT cover models up to 1989, it stops - only with a supplement chapter - with 1985-87 models. Altough there are many drawings and pictures that undoubtedly help, some specifics are missing. For example, there is an ample narration on the advantages of checking spark plugs, but not one word on how to get them out of the engine, which for this car is not straighforward. Again, the nitty-gritty of oil checking are found hidden in text with general comments on the subject. Therefore, I am not sure if it should be 100% recommended, since there are other (better) books available e.g. the Bentley manual.

Fine book on Porsche 911 in old school style :O)

Disappointed in the Manual for the following reasons: 1. It is US spec that I was not aware of 2. It is soft cover 3. It does not cover all aspects of the car 4. Pictures are not very clear. Went out & bought the proper Bentley manual instead.

This is not like the new manuals that say visit your local dealer to get the problem fixed but it really tells you how to fix it, pictures are black and white but very clear. Also this manual differ from many other haynes manuals when looking at the engine section, its MUCH bigger and more detailed, not many modern manuals show you how to take apart the engine. Simply put a must for the 911 enthusiast that wanna fix their own car from this period.

Book is awesome companion book to my collection. Working on my car this book fills in the gaps. After a slow delivery time with no details and no notification from anyone. Tracking needs to be bettter.

Haynes manuals are an industry standard and all based on a complete tear down, examination and rebuild of every target vehicle, in their own shop. I have several Haynes manuals for other cars and am very satisfied with their work, I don't think you can go wrong with their manuals, an industry standard. Yes, factory service manuals are more precise, but they also cost several hundred or even thousands of dollars more.

Der "Haynes" ist leider nur auf englischer Sprache erhältlich, ist aber dennoch aufgrund des technischen Englisch dennoch gut verständlich. Für mich eines der am meisten unterschätzten Manuals/Bücher für den 911. Ich würde sogar soweit gehen, dass es bei dem Preis von unter 30€ quasi Pflicht für alle Besitzer eines F-/G-Modells ist und auf längeren Trips unbedingt ins Handschuhfach gehört! Wenn man sich ernsthaft mit dem luftgekühlten 911 bis 1989 beschäftigen will/muss, wird man schnell feststellen, dass nur ein Buch allein irgendwann nicht ausreicht, weil genau diese oder jene Information nicht in den bereits vorhandenen Büchern zu finden ist. Insofern hat jeder Porsche Schrauber mehr als nur ein Buch zum Thema im Regal stehen. Der Haynes sollte aber aus mehreren Gründen zu den ersten Büchern gehören, die man sich anschafft! Vorab die Dinge, die mir nicht gefallen: Billiges Papier (fast wie ein Telefonbuch), die Fotos sind teilweise schwer erkennbar, nur in Englisch verfügbar, als Paperback nicht besonders gut geschützt und der Einband fängt bei häufiger Nutzung an, unschön einzureißen. Das war's aber auch schon. Jetzt aber die Pluspunkte: Der Preis! Für ein Porsche Manual eines der günstigsten am Markt. Sicher - der Preis sollte als Kriterium bei Porsche Literatur nicht an erster Stelle stehen. Und gerade deswegen ist es mir absolut unverständlich, weswegen kaum jemand im deutschsprachigen Raum dieses Buch kennt und nutzt. Dem Preis sind andererseits auch die Foto- und Papierqualität geschuldet. Damit kann ich aber gut leben, die Qualität ist ausreichend, um zu erkennen, was gemeint ist. Andererseits hat das Buch ein sehr geringes Gewicht und ist gut zu handhaben, egal ob man gerade im oder unterm Auto schraubt. Der Informationsgehalt ist sehr gut. Klar - alles steht auch nicht drin, es erklärt auch nicht die Funktionsweise eines Viertaktmotors, dafür gibt es andere Literatur. Es enthält aber bspw. alle Schaltpläne inkl. aller Varianten, sehr viele Explosionszeichnungen und Bilder rund um alle Aspekte der Wartung und Reparatur eines 911. Sicher - vieles ist schon an anderer Stelle verfügbar, aber für's alltägliche Schrauben am Auto ist dieses Buch für mich die Referenz und jenes Buch, was ich dabei immer in der Hand habe, wenn ich am Auto schraube. Besonders erwähnenswert ist, dass das Buch auch ein ganzes Kapitel (20 Seiten) dem Sportomatic Getriebe widmet, inkl. einer Fehlersuchtabelle dazu. Das ist m.W. in der kommerziellen Porsche Literatur einzigartig! Ferner werden auch alle Varianten der Kraftstoffversorgung mit Vergaser oder K-Jetronic inkl. der US Modelle erwähnt. Des Weiteren konzentriert ein Kapitel (Chapter 11 "Supplement: Revisions and information on later models") auch alle Änderungen ab dem 2,7l Einspritzmotzor über den SC bis zum späten 3.2er Carrera. Es ist also sehr gut geeignet, wenn man die F-/G-Modelle von der technischen Seite komplett verstehen will. Durch die bereits erwähnten Explosionszeichnungen bekommt man auch sehr schnell den notwendigen Überblick, wie etwas zu demontieren und später wieder zu montieren ist. Egal ob es dabei ein Fensterheber, der Motor, das Getriebe oder der Mengenteiler der K-Jetronic ist. Die Explosionszeichnungen und viele der enthaltenen Informationen sind sicher auch im originalen Porsche Werkstatthandbuch zu finden. Da diese aber immer schwerer zu beschaffen sind und Porsche sich damit auch sehr zurückhält, sind diese Informationen hier umso wertvoller. Die Explosionszeichnungen aus dem online frei verfügbaren Teilekatalog von Porsche sind mit diesen aber definitiv nicht zu vergleichen, die im Haynes sind im Stil der alten Werkstatthandbücher quasi fotorealistisch gezeichnet und damit viel verständlicher und übersichtlicher, und in ihrer Darstellung mit dem Porsche Werkstatthandbuch vergleichbar. An Informationsgehalt wird dieses Buch nur noch vom wesentlich teureren "Bentley" (Bentley Publishers: "Porsche 911/911 SC/Carrera Service Manual") übertroffen, der weit über 100€ kostet, sein Geld aber auch wert ist. Beide, Bentley und Haynes, orientieren sich in ihrer Darstellung und Kapitelreihenfolge am Porsche Werkstatthandbuch. Alles in allem eine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung!
