A Shocking Bump in the Demon King's Road

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2018*

At last we come to a volume that has never seen the light of fan translators, meaning my experience with this volume was as fresh as it could be. This volume not being translated online was actually kind of a god send, as I would not have been as shocked as I was by the direction the plot goes nearly as much as I was.If you've been keeping up then you know that our Demon King, Aur, has earn the ire of the largest threat around; the female born Hero's father. I had suspected that there'd have been no way that Aur would have let such a powerful pawn slip through his fingers, but what I didn't foresee was this was less a 'slipping through fingers' and more of a 'wretched from his hands'.The king isn't playing around and sends his most powerful warrior, the Hero's brother, to retrieve her. The brother is completely impervious to all forms of magic, and as such is a natural enemy to Aur, who can only watch as his female Hero is hauled off to her father where the enchantment placed upon her by Aur is removed. She is then sent back to kill Aur, but ends up falling to her brother's blade when she reveals that she actually fell in love with Aur during her time with him.No you might be think "oh, revival magic, no problem." Well, not for the Hero, as her status prevents her from being revived. Aur has lost his most powerful unit, and boy howdy does this piss him off. He starts with crushing the brother's sanity and love, taking the brother's wife, ravaging her, killing her, and destroying her very soul right in front of the brother. Allowing our succubus to finish off the magically impervious brother, in what was a far crueler fate then even the male adventurer suffered before being turned into a dullahan. Before her death however, we did learn something very very important. Aur's backstory. Why he has become the way he is, and who that woman was whose head he was holding in the very first few pages of the first volume. But Aur isn't done, not by a long shot. As he launches a full-on assault against the King, successfully causing the King himself to step forth to battle Aur. But Aur admits he'd have no chance against this old Hero, but, what about a cursed dragon? Because that's what comes crashing down upon the King's castle, a powerful and old dragon that peruses an artifact that Aur has tricked the King into taking. It's a brilliant and evil move for Aur, but it just goes to show you that Aur isn't about to let this King die a pleasant death. All in all this volume wowed me with the direction it went, killing off a seemingly protected and powerful character, and having Aur exact a revenge that is far above and beyond what is needed. It's all action and tense conversation, and it makes me wonder what sort of man Aur will be after the King is dead. Will he still be that level headed and perfect judge of character, or will this loss cut deeper than we expected?

    Wow! Shocking volume!

Aur has conquered the Kingdom of Figuria, but it's not enough. He wants to rule the world. As he debates where his next move should be, the decision is taken from him. The powerful kingdom of Grandiela has declared war and marches to face him. With the king's daughter, Yunis, one of Aur's lovers, he hopes to use her to defeat her father. But her father's plans may include Yunis after all. As the armies meet up and their tactics are unleashed, both sides have surprise for the other. Will Yunis stay faithful to the demon king, or will her family win her back by breaking the enchantments upon her mind? To win this war, Aur will have to be his most ruthless.Wow, this book was dark and brutal. Not a lot of happiness in this one as the armies square off and we learn just what it means to be a hero in this world. Yunis is one, and will her destiny make her Aur's enemy or will her love make her his ally? It's an emotional book. For a harem story, the narrative has embraced the darkness nibbling around the edges. Aur is a villain threw and threw. He wants to rule the world, and he will do nothing to stop it. But is Yunis right about him?I can't wait to read book five. It sucks it won't be out for nearly a year. This series is great. While this one has the least amount of naughty fun, the story dominates. The characters vie against each other as different wills clash and rebound.

The hero's life and the costs that come with it

*by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2018*

I concur with a previous reviewer that this volume of How to Build a Dungeon is lighter on the sexual content. However, a reader who wants interesting characters and a thoughtful and sometimes heartbreaking story will not be disappointed. Lord Aur is confronted by a powerful kingdom seeking war. It's led by Yunis' father and we also meet her brother, both mighty heroes and what follows is a meditation on the hero's life. We also learn more about Aur's past and his philosophical outlook. How to Build a Dungeon is more than mere erotica; it is a series that provokes serious thought about the nature of power.
