Practice sesions clear and concise, The book is nice1
A simple technique to understanding the work words do in poerty and song writing. The practice is gentle and not difficult to perform.Of all the praise I could heap upon Pat Pattison, the one bonus dimension is that of nuances, which are able to enhance poetry through the use of subtile qualities that words may possess, such as, shades or implications or reflections as to a more appropiate choice of words for a greater Songwriting experience: Essential Guide to Rhyming: A Step-by-Step Guide to Better Rhyming and Lyrics (Songwriting Guides)]].I have sent this book to collegues and students to share the potential for skill enhancement.

Very Good - Needs Rhyming Dictionary
This book does an excellent job of explaining the types of rhymes available to songwriters. How to choose the appropriate rhyme, and where to find it in a rhyming dictionary. I have had no previous experience in lyric writing or poetry and it was very easy reading, yet there is enough depth to last a very long time. You will need a rhyming dictionary for the exercises in this book, Pattison recommends 'The Complete Rhyming Dictionary' by Clement Wood. Overall this book is excellent for beginners, with enough content to assist more advanced lyricists.

Other reviews were misleading
I read other reviews and actually bought 2 rhyming dictionaries to go along with this book. Now that I have it, I realize the dictionaries weren't necessary. Most of the excercises refer you to your own record collection for the answers to the excercise. Other excercises want you to dig into your own vocabulary and come up with solutions. Unless you have a very very limited vocabulary, or no songs to refer to, a seperate rhyming dictionary is absolutely not a necessity. In fact, since I had both the book and the dictionary to refer to, I flipped through randomly and discovered that the explanations and definitions of various rhymes and techniques were much clearer and more concise in the Berklee guide than in the bloated and wordy dictionary. I liked the simple and straitforward style of each excercise, which could be adapted to every individuals pace to develop their own system.I don't think a book about rhyming can make you an instant songwriter, but this can help you with the foundation of how a song is built. It talks about why rhymes are important and what they invoke in the human brain-the connections that are formed, which can make the difference as to whether a song will be a hit or not.My daughter is the musican and I bought this book for her because she is going through the phase where she thinks songs are just bad poems about how miserable her teenage life is. There is no style, no rhyme or reason, to what she writes. I think that these excercises will be very helpful, whether she chooses to use a rhyming dictionary or not.

Vital tools
Pat Pattison, I've recently discovered has actually "written the book", for curing writers block. With what seems to be an almost scientific approach to human speech and sound.

Very general info
This book covers the very basic "rules" of rhyming. If you've written more than a couple of poems or songs, you probably won't get a lot out of this book. That being said, if you are brand new to songwriting this might be helpful to get you started. The book does set a foundation for those that have never taken a literature class or writing class.

Never have I learned so many valuable tips about rhyming in such a short time with this book
I highly recommend it - easy to understand for beginner songwriters and refreshing for those who have been writing for years. Small chapters so you can do a bit each day. I highly recommend this one and also to partner it with other Pat Pattison books….I'm a bit of a fan of his style of teaching and writing as well as his framework for songwriting…..it just makes sense
