CO is BARELY lighter than air (about .96 to air being 1 for vapor density), and will mix and collect like normal air does, with drafts and normal air movement. CO detectors can be mounted at just about any height, though many manufacturers (somewhat arbitrarily) picked 5ft or chest height as the ideal mounting height.
