You basically HAVE to go one at a time or they try to connect to each other. I stupidly stabbed myself because they kept trying to connect when I wasn't wanting them to and it's difficult to pull them apart (nearly impossible with one hand, a challenge with two). Worst part was that my set was missing a piece. I have an extra backing with no top magnet. So I ended up with a set of 3 which means I really only got to hang 4 posters instead of 5 with this set.
