Easy for a newbie!
I'm a new knitter and this was something to play with. I haven't tried the sweaters or anything, but the patterns are great!

Fair Isle For Beginners
Lynne Watterson has written a fairly comprehensive review of fair isle knitting that covers step to step techniques, easy to follow stitch patterns and projects to get you started. It is published by St. Martin's Griffin, a very reputable knitters' press. The first chapters are about the book: yarns, choosing colors and knitting kits.Next come basics such as casting on, knit and purl, binding off, increasing, decreasing, gauge, circular knitting, weaving, charts, etc.She then tackles patterns, focusing on stitch guides. She covers corrugated ribbing, seeding and two projects: a child;s cardigan and a child's hoodie. Next projects are fair isle bands, fingerless mitts, hot water bottle cover, beret, and leg warmer, along with hat and scarf.Lesson 19 is fair isle patterns: Mug cozies and pot holder, bag, throw, and pillows. The end of the book goes through ways to block and press, seam, adding beads, tassels and pom pons,The book ends with aftercare essentials which are very important for wool, especially fair isle. Ms. Watterson lists everything one will need for fair isle knitting including the yarn that is needed for each of the projects. My only criticism of the book is that the colors photographed are rather drab and there are so many ways to make fair isle bright and colorful. Other than that, it is a good book, one that I'm happy to have in my library.

Excellent into to Fair Isle knitting, with a focus on color
I am so glad I got this book! It's very well-written, and has great instructional illustrations. I am a novice at Fair Isle knitting, and it's done a lot to get me oriented in the mindset necessary, plus having good info about the needed skills. The illustrations and photos are very helpful indeed.I do wish that there were more very small projects included, maybe with several different colorways- because Fair Isle depends so much on the yarn colors, and the same pattern can look vastly different depending on its color choices, as the book illustrates; I just wish it had more examples, especially of sets that had more than 3 colors.I really love all the patterns pictured and graphed! It would be interesting to knit the legwarmers in 3-4 colors, changing them with every repeat of the same pattern.I am just edging my way into Fair Isle, and this book is an excellent resource.

Easy to follow & inspiring.
I found it to have very clear instructions of several different techniques to learn Fair Isle Knitting. Love the lay out of the book with short, 1 page, lessons to follow in the front and projects of different levels of learning in the back. I would have given it 5 stars except I had to look up the very first lesson of casting on for 2 colors bc it only shows general cast on instructions for one color.

Takes the fear out of fair-isle!
This book is exactly what I hoped it would be when I ordered it, and then some. Yes, experienced knitters don't need the introductory matter that explains the basics of knitting...but this isn't for experienced knitters. This is for people like me, with some knitting skills and limited experience, who want to learn the basics of stranded knitting. Along the way, Watterson also supplies information on knitting jogless stripes, ways to perfect horizontal as well as vertical striped ribbing, blocking, finishing, adding beads and buttons, and making and attaching tassels and pompoms. The diagrams and written instructions are clear and consistent, the charts are easy to read, and the designs are illustrated with swatches. The whole effect is to make knitting with more than one color look like something even I could master. The patterns are just icing for this cake, but very nice icing: attractive and useful items that build on the skills Watterson teaches. The index, bless the hearts of everyone involved in this book, is thorough.Excuse me--I think I'll go knit some legwarmers now.

Essential information for colorwork
I love the look of colorwork in knitting, but the idea of working with multiple strands of yarn at once makes me think I"m going to weave myself some sort of a web and get stuck in it. This book simplifies the process and offers great photos and some good beginner patterns to take some of the mystery out of the technique. As I expand my knitting skills, this will be a key resource in my library of knitting books.

No lo recomiendo. Carece de las instrucciones necesarias.
Estoy incursionando en tejidos como fair isle y estoy buscando una ayuda que me guie en el proceso. Este libro no me dio ninguna ayuda. He visto cosas mas utiles en internet y gratis. He iniciado el proceso de devolucion.Una lastima ya que aun sigo buscando un libro que me ayude a diseñar sweaters y cardigans con ese tipo de tejido. No recomiendo el libro.

This is more than Fair Isle Knitting
A very worthwhile book. This book gives a lot of beginner knitting information too. Wish I had bought it years ago. Lots of colourwork knitting covered with projects for the person who is beginning to knit with two colours.
