Oats contain gluten, so how can this be gluten-free?

This cereal has been tested many times and shown to contain actual gluten from wheat. That's because the oats are "mechanically separated" and the machines are often fooled into leaving some wheat grains in. When oats are grown it's often in rotation with wheat. Some wheat plants grow as a weed in oat fields. All oats must be mechanically separated from "volunteer" wheat or other grains before processing into oat products. You can do that in a gluten free facility, but if you're still using mechanical separators and not Purity Protocol oats, then it's going to be randomly contaminated to various levels at various times. You're playing roulette. Additionally, oats contain a prolamin called avenin which is similar enough to the gluten prolamins to make about 10% of people with Celiac react to it. Same with quinoa. Certain varieties of quinoa contain prolamins that cause the gluten reaction. The website Gluten Free Watchdog has more about oats and which oats have only the avenin risk and not also the cross contamination risk (Purity Protocol).
