As leader of The E Street Band he is known for his down to earth poetic lyrics and marathon stage performances regularly topping over 3 hours.Featured on the covers of a number of his albums, most notably Born To Run from 1975, Springsteen's famous and beloved Guitar is known affectionately as 'The Mutt'. The guitar gained it's nickname due to it's extensive amount of modifications and the fact that it's exact age and origin have always been a cause of much speculation.It is thought by some to have started out life as a 1954 guitar with a butterscotch finish and white pickguard but when Springsteen acquired the guitar in 1972 it had already undergone major alterations at the hands of the recording studio it belonged to. The original body had been extensively routed out to accommodate the fitting of 4 pickups rather than the single pickup an Esquire would have had or the 2 on a standard. It is thought that the neck is from a later model, possibly a 1959, but this again is a source of much debate among guitar experts. The black pick guard is also not thought to be original.The owner of a local New Jersey music store called Phil Petillo replaced 'The Mutt's' pickups with his own hand wound hotter versions. He also changed the bridge saddles from the original 3 brass units to a set of six titanium ones. Another Petillo modification was the fitment of his own patented 'Petillo Precision Frets' which, unlike all standard frets were triangular.What has never been in doubt is that the little 'Mutt' that Springsteen paid $180 for in 1972 has served him admirably through countless gigs and recording sessions. The guitar was eventually retired from live work in the 90s and these days 'The Boss' uses mainly clones on stage.
