Good, but does not begin to scrath the surface
While this is one of the better books about type 1 diabetes, it does not begin to scratch the surface of what it is really like to live and deal with this almost always overwhelming disease. I am the mother of a type 1 diabetic child and have been inundated with no lack of completely ignorant people. The general public needs to be educated more about this disease! Dealing with the disease alone is exhausting, overwhelming and a complete and utter 24/7 job and rollarcoaster "life"style. Add to that all the other challenges(ignorance of people, insensativeness of people, fighting for insurance coverage, costs, emergency situations, and emotions of watching your child go without, stuggle, panic, etc. It's truly heartbreaking. This is a really good mini educational book for people, but there is always more to be explored- ALL the facets of Type 1 Diabetes need to be put out there- for people to understand. Especially the fact that Type 1 Diabetes is a completely DIFFERENT disease than Type 2(It does go into that a little in this book, but this needs to be emphasized and re-empasized to the general public> Too many people think you can just east lettuce and veggies the rest of your life and everything will just be fine, and this is JUST NOT so. Type 1 Diabetics take insulin and drive themselves crazy all day long every day checking and rechecking blood sugars and dosing and rechecking dosages of insulin just to stay ALIVE and to help not do damage to their bodies. I am in favor of this book for anyone who truly wants to learn about Type 1 diabetes or who has someone they care about who is fighting against this beast.

I've been waiting for a book like this!
I have to say THANK YOU to the author for the book. My son has lived with Type 1 every day for the past 3 years and he is now 6. We have many well meaning family and friends who still have misconceptions about this disease (and a few who don't have a clue) and this is the perfect book. It was an easy read. I read through it in an hour or so, and you don't have to read it in one sitting because you can flip to the area or skim the headings to find what you want. It was written in simple terms so people with no knowledge of the disease can understand. She did a great job balancing the fact that although Type 1 is serious and needs constant attention, children/people living with the disease are normal people. I honestly felt that she wrote down conversations I've had almost word for word. We bought one and are giving it to his teacher who had shown interest and I'm buying 10 more for family members and to have a couple on hand to loan out. THANK YOU!

Excellent!
I am 32 years old and have had type 1 diabetes since I was 8.Recently I've met a wonderful woman who's now my girlfriend. Out of concern she wanted to ask me questions about my diabetes. I wasn't good at answering the questions mainly because after 20+ years I don't enjoy talking about it. Almost 99% of the information about diabetes on the Internet is about type 2.I bought her this book read it myself then gave it to her. I thought it was wonderful at giving a basic understanding of the disease. It helped put her mind at ease and answered questions and dispelled many urban legends associated with type 1 diabetes. The author stated this book was for coaches or teachers who have students with type 1 diabetes. She can now add for girlfriends of life long bachelors.Good book!

This book does provide answers to many questions that people have about Type 1 diabetes. When the questions and answers are analyzed, some of the responses are complicated. They might be easier to understand if the question directly preceding it had introduced the subject and then moved on to the criticized response with a more precise question. I bought this book because my spouse does not understand Type 1 and continually accuses me of "using" my disease as an excuse. He also thinks I can do things on his schedule because there is no reason for me to have to address high or low blood sugars immediately. .

Helpful!
I recently started dating someone who has Type 1. He has lived with it for 5 years. He likes when I ask questions, but at the same time he hates to answer them. This really helped me understand what he is going through and understand what's going on in his body -- why he is feeling the way he is, how to help if he's in a low, etc. Thank you!

Easy to understand summary of Type 1 diabetes.
Covers a wide variety of common and most pertinent questions related to diabetes. Occasionally humorous, it tries to appeal to the non-technical person, so it does not mention any specific research. It is also a bit outdated, since CGM and other technologies have improved, although not by leaps. Some other reasons people choose not to wear a CGM or pump is because they may be self-conscious. The mother is writing from a perspective of a male child, so some of this book doesn’t apply to older non-school-age women, for example.

Newly diagnosed
I am a LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) and have been managing my diabetes the way a type 2 does for many years. I have recently been diagnosed with type 1. It is so different and I am beginning a new normal. This book was extremely helpful for me and hopefully for my husband after he reads it. Easy to understand. It does have quite a bit of information about children, but that didn't take away any of the helpfulness for understanding what it means for me.

A good place to start
My fiancée has type one diabetes, and after a couple episodes that led to hospital visits, I decided I needed to educate myself. After reading what I would more define as a pamphlet than a book, I do feel I am more educated on the subject. However, this book is definitely geared more towards adults coping with diabetic children, which is understandable, since it was written by a parent with a diabetic child. I am now looking for something a bit more detailed and comprehensive to continue my education.

Get a copy for your kids teacher
First off there is a difference in the measurement used for reading blood glucose levels, (is this an American book, I know they use a different insulin rate?) I've not come across this before but please don't be put off, there is a lot of sound info here. It is published in Q & A format. My son is moving on from nursery to school so I have purchased this to go into a pack for his teachers. The information on behaviour and blood glucose levels is quite useful. I had a difficult time explaining to his playgroup staff when he was newly diagnosed that blood sugar levels could impact on his behaviour (not excusing - just explaining).Worth a read if you have a newly diagnosed child or one that is just starting playgroup/nursery/school.

Easy to read, quick reference book
This is diabetes in a nutshell! It provides concise answers to the questions people mainly have about diabetes, and the explanations are not academic/medical, which makes the information very accessible to the general public or for those not working in the medical side of diabetes. Every parent of a type-1 diabetic should be given a copy of this little book at diagnosis.

Just what I wanted!
I have a new partner who is type 1 diabetic. The lows scare me a lot and I wanted to be more prepared for them. This gives you the reasons why they go low, so, as partners, we can help to prevent it too. Not too complicated and short. Got the info I needed without being killed my science in the process.

Useful
As I have recently been introduced to diabetes by someone who has diabetes, I found this book very useful with helping me understand the little things about diabetes that I would feel uncomfortable asking the diabetic whilst also gaining information about the correct procedures and checks to make.
