The Best of Don McLean

Old gold
I bought this because McLean was very important in the 70's. Unfortunately the majority of the songs are so well known now that it does not make refreshing listening. Apparently, McLean said in an interview once, 'Vincent' is played every day in the basement of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. I recall one performer saying that he was giving a concert to a school, I think it was, and the young, unknown McLean was sitting in the front row listening avidly.Still some very likable and clever songs, if a bit hackneyed now. People have analysed 'the meaning behind 'American Pie' for decades now (generally conceded to be about the death of Buddy Holly, Richy Valens and the Big Bopper in an light aircraft crash).

VINCENT/EASY LISTENING
The song "Vincent" reminds me of my long lost grandfather, everytime there was a family "do" my grandfather always got me on the dancefloor and always got the disco DJ to play Vincent and my grandfather always made sure we had the dancefloor to ourselves. Always brings tears to my eyes.I listened to the whole album and this album is a kind of album you can sit back with your eyes closed and relax. Easy listening. The one and only Don McLean

What a disappointment....
....I hugely respect Don Mcelan but there is something "off" about this CD and I cannot quite pin it down. The best known tracks do not sound as good as on some of my "Hits of the 70's" albums and that does not make sense to me. Also some really dire covers in there as padding. Sorry about this Don.... but I really cannot recommend this LP in anyway :-(

STARRY STARRY STAR
Don McLean, the perennial 60's college boy with the plaintive voice has revealed his crown jewels in a manner of speaking. For me there is NOT a bad track on the CD. Vincent, and I love You so, Winterwood....they all are here including the incredible 40+ year old American Pie. His simple country guitar playing, plaintive voice, brilliant lyrics, beautifully simplistic production and deep meanings are and always have been Vastly underrated. McLean ranks with Paul Simon as a song writer but is never given that due credit. Let's do something about it!!!!

Nice listening.
If you want his best hits then go for American Pie but if you want an addition then this is a nice album. He cover's some of Buddy Holly's and Roy Orbison's songs on this collection.

Excellent
This is a great collection of songs from Don McLean. The first two, American Pie and Vincent, are 10/10, absolutely brilliant. Of course, after this it is difficult for the rest of the songs to live up to the first two. However, they are solid, and I particularly enjoy his version of Crying in The Chapel. This album is well worth purchasing.
