The Woodpecker development team started the Ultra-Shear project with a commitment to produce the best carbide inserts for woodturning. They interviewed dozens of carbide manufacturers, seeking out a partner that recognized the unique requirements of turning tools. Any carbide blend can create a long-lasting edge, but for advanced performance at the lathe, you need a truly keen edge. That requires a carbide that doesn’t just last, but also is fine-grained enough not to crumble when formed to a really sharp angle. The result of months of testing and trials is a unique nano-grain carbide matrix, polished to a mirror-finish on the cutting surface and precision ground on the bevel. They are the sharpest, longest lasting inserts on the market. The square Ultra-Shear tools come standard with the full square insert (#20121 on the full and mid size tools and #20126 on the pen size tool). Some turners find the 2” and 4” radius square inserts easier to use for smoothing cuts. They also can smooth ridges inside bowls, as long as the radius of the bowl side is greater than the radius of the cutter.

high quality carbide inserts
I have been turning wood for over 20 years but I am just trying carbide tools. I liked the woodpeckers design and have had experience with their products as being some of the best available. i was not disappointed with the ultra shear tools. they have a good balance and feel and are sharp. I recommend them without reserve
