The photo's show the actual damage to the tree, which was significant. The tree is in a neighbors front yard and they were out of town dealing with family medical issues when this damage occurred. The tree is very prominent and I hated to see the tree have to be cut down due to this storm damage. I ordered this product after reading on a University website about the need to protect the tree from excessively scarring and insects damaging the trees interior, in an attempt to protect and heal itself. This wound exposed the very core of the trunk where the sap flows and the moisture which sustains the tree is transferred within the tree from the roots up to the branches. The good news is that the damage to this tree happened nearly 3 months ago and the tree is thriving, despite the serious wound. The tree continues to retain all of its leaves, the leaves appear healthy and normal and the tree is growing (I marked it when I repaired it, so I could determine if it was still growing). This product is very easy to use with the brush mounted to the container cap. Even with a wound as large as this one, I used about half of the total container to thoroughly seal the tree's damaged area. I then wrapped the tree to protect it so it would have a chance to heal. The tree wrap I used is also shown in the photo with this product. I didn't expect this tree to survive this gaping wound, which was over 24" in length and effectively split the tree in half, in area of the tree where the damage occurred. I am pleased this product has seemed to help to save this tree. I now use this tree kote on the end of all limbs on trees when they are trimmed. It certainly seems to help prevent the need for the tree to scar itself as extensively to respond to the limb pruning and cutting. So far, the tree is thriving and I hope it continues to. The damage to the trunk of the tree certainly affected the area of the tree which transfers moisture up through the tree..............I believe coating the tree was instrumental in its survival and continuing to thrive. It was a small investment of time and money to attempt to save the tree and it appears to have been successful. You should use this whenever trimming and pruning trees. Just coat the area of the saw cut or the damage to protect the tree and permit it to heal itself. Also, make sure when you trim a limb against a tree's trunk, leave a little nub, about 1" in length instead of cutting the limb off flush as then the tree only has to heal the small cut, verses the potentially larger wound against the trunk. It permits the tree to direct its energy toward productive growth, instead of healing areas where cuts, pruning or damage have happened. Review: Great size. I am new at this.** A: hard to be specific depending on your needs. i used it twice on a space of about 6" x 9" on a damaged truck (bob cat hit it) and still have a little left over. does appear to regrow tree under it but can't really definitively verify this. painted on heavy both times. can wash out in heavy rain before it cures. once cured seems to stay in place (about a week). does sometimes harden somewhat when stored. put the jar in a pot of very hot (not boiling) water for a few hours to soften it out. seems to last for a long time. bottom line, works well. **Q: I'm in need of a product to put on a pruned branch that will prevent anything growing back in the future, is this it? If not what is?** A: This product Protects pruned branches so that New growth can hopefully begin again, under the pruned area. Check with local nursery if you want to stop growth altogether ! **Q: I had a co-dominant trunk cut off a red maple. Approx 12 inch diameter. Will this product protect a cut that large?** A: This a a really good product. I have used it for covering areas as large as 6" in diameter. It quickly forms a healing skin. What will hinder it working is excessive sap that won't let Tree Kote form a skin as it dries. This may not be what an arborist would tell you to do, but I once had a Maple with a would that had sap flow. I took a sturdy paper shop towel and cut a patch the size of the tree wound with 1/2 inch overlap. I laid it over the wound and then quickly covered it with Tree Kote. The covering dried and stopped the flow of sap. When it had dried thoroughly by the second day. I added a second coat of Tree Kote. It held and the tree is healing. That might work but with the large area. I know they make this product in 1 gal. containers. You might want to contact Walter E. Clark & Son, Inc. in Orange, Conn. for their advice.
