Saved by the Boats: The Heroic Sea Evacuation of September 11 (Encounter: Narrative Nonfiction Picture Books)

This book is a wonderful way to begin talking to children about what happened on September 11, 2001. It focuses on the people who helped that day, with a message of hope and unity. The text and illustrations are honest about what happened, but not in a way that would be frightening to most children who around third grade and up. I read it to both my children when they were in 2nd and 5th grades and it was a wonderful conversation starter.

Great book poorly packaged. Bought the soft cover to help educate my lol one. It arrived in a padded envelope that was folded in half and shoved in my mailbox. It’s a shame that it’s in such poor condition because it really is a good depiction of September 11

This is a stunning little known story of the heroic boats on 9/11. With no other forms of transportation available, the courageous captains and crews of all types of boats converged and began evacuating people from the island. It's a great story to share with elementary aged children to share the history of 9/11 but focus on the positive way America came together instead of the details that may be too overwhelming for smaller children. Amazingly written and illustrated with wonderful additional information in the back of the book.

This book was a great read for remembering 9/11. Living through 9/11 and watching many documentaries on the day, I still did not know the importance of the boats until reading this story with my child. It’s a great read.

Bought this book for September 11th in my fifth grade class. A great hero story appropriate for students that shares a look into what that day was like in New York City.
