The Lotus: How I Beat The Patriarchy: and emerged from a toxic, abusive environment into a life of freedom and love

I know my title is sort of trite but this book was written with so much heart snd soul. I would take it everywhere with me until I finished it. Jo-Jo’s story isn’t only a story for the reader’s delight but it’s her true story. I know the culture well and the trauma and abuse she survived is extreme but NOT UNUSUAL! While I was reading this riveting autobiography, I could see and hear the interactions. She didn’t exaggerate how narrow SOME of the culture can be! It’s not ALL but does happen. Great book!!!

When you meet a strong woman like JoJo, you have no idea the life that she has led to form her into the woman she is today. I’ve known JoJo professionally for years and always admired her drive and inspirational approach. Knowing the back story makes me value our friendship even more. Read the book cover to cover in a weekend. Hard to read but couldn’t put down. If you are struggling with family this is holding you back, this is a must read.

Its sad to read about what goes on behind closed doors when the image portrayed on the outside looks so different. I applaude you for having the courage to write about it for self healing but at the sametime you are helping others who have experianced the same. Way to go!

This book is written as though the author is sitting across from the reader telling her life story. As such, the details are raw, gut-wrenching, and uncomfortable at times. Although the reader may feel overwhelmed by the amount of information, the purpose of the book is to motivate women with similar struggles and abuse to act. She notes that so many women stay put, instead of breaking free from toxic people and relationships.

A must read for anyone wanting to break free from patriarchy or abusive relationships. Bravo Jojo! I’m very proud of you.

Excellent book. Won’t be able to put it down. So many emotions: anger towards her abusers, hate, sadness and happiness!
