OPST's Commando Heads are the result of decades of focus on sustained anchor systemology (SAS) by Ed Ward. They are designed to expand the capabilities of shorter spey rods, switch rods and single hand rods beyond that of normal. You may be surprised at their short length, but this was no accident. The ultra-short design provides an effortless casting feel and enhances performance in circumstances of restricted casting room, troublesome winds and in casting bulky flies. It also makes them more fishable than longer lines that are hard to control on the water. Wanna roll cast? Underhand? Nymph? Single hand Skagit with a haul? Overhead? Go right ahead. You have never cast a line like the Commando. Please note: the end with the line ID, which is also the fat end, is the Front end.

Casts like a missile
Great little design the 475 is 18 feet and the short taper on this thing really loads a road quickly. I use this for surf fishing for stripers using overhead casts or I do spey casts in bays and estuaries all on an 7/8/9 13'6 spey rod with a grain window of 550-850. My primary setup is 475 grain OPST Commando head with 10ft of T20 as a tip but the same rod can cast overhead as much as 875 grains before it starts feeling overloaded. That said with this short head it really loads quick and shoots very far and effortlessly which is what I would expect from a much heavier rig. For spey casting I was surprised that it still loaded the rod well even though the rod is rated for skagit heads probably a good 150 grains heavier. I think its just how compact the heads are that they hang a lot of weight at the rod tip being such a short taper and it helps load a rod using much less grains than a longer taper would require. overall good quality of build too I'd say the build quality is as good or better than the big names. I'd definitely purchase again.

Amazing line
I was a little leery of this line when I was reading the reviews. It is amazing how easy it is to use and the distance you can achieve with so little effort. I’m new to the Spey I didn’t want to break the bank on new gear so I figured that for less than a $100 I could give it a try. Well worth it. Highly recommend the line.

Perfect Combination to Shorter Spey Rods
The short (18') 450gr Skagit head was the perfect ingredient to make my new 6wt 13' rod come alive. First time on the water it rocketed the T-11 and fly across the river. Second cast I was rewarded with a beautiful chrome hen. The shorter line coupled with the weight makes it much easier to get a good load on the rod when there is virtually no room on the backside.

Way overpriced- could use a sinking tip at much lower cost for same result.
Steelhead fishing- Used it to get greater range on casts. It works fine but you could alternately put splitshot on the end of your line to achieve the same thing. With the splitshot approach, you could customize it to your particular casting style at a cost of .50$ or less!

Easy Casting, especially for a novice
I had been using a Beulah Tonic (Skagit), 22.5 foot length, on my 13 foot rod, and learning the basic casts, when a friend suggested I try his rod, loaded with and OPT Commando. I did, and immediately ordered a 450 grain OPT Commando for myself,, and have been fishing with it on my 12'4" rod. Improved my cast immediately. Highly recommended.

They are great lines and very versatile since you can change heads ...
This is about the easiest single hand spey line to get , if you want to ,or need to learn this type of casting . I have one on an 9 ft ,5 weight and one on my 10.6ft,7 weight 2 hander for steelhead and lake run browns . They are great lines and very versatile since you can change heads to match the conditions you are fishing.

Great Product
Their commando heads & sink tips are top notch. Can’t say enough good stuff about the products, however, their customer service has been 0-2. Needed some clarification on some head specs and never heard boo from them. Went to Kiene’s Fly Shop and they helped me figure it out.In conclusion, product good (5 stars), service bad (0 stars).

not as good as i had hoped
i bought this to test the casting ability after seeing lots of ads. but found it not to my liking. perhaps it is my style of casting that is the problem. i will stick to other shooting heads.
