Celebration Cakes: Party Cakes for Every Occassion

I was quite looking forward to this book when I ordered it but on getting it. Especially as it is by Fiona Cairns who made the wedding cake for Prince William and Kate. I thought the book might be about buttercream and classic looking type of cakes and ideas on how to decorate similar to the front cover but it wasn't. It's a bit of a mix of traditional and iced.I found that the actual cakes and designs were actually not that great, especially the sugarpaste covered cakes. One of the first recipes in the book was for Russian dolls. It doesn't give you templates for size or how many dolls you can get from one cake, there are no pictures on covering the cake dolls, just a short description. Even though the novelty cakes looks fairly easy I would have liked more information.I think some of the recipes sound lovely as I am always looking for new flavours in my baking so not a totally bad book.

I was really looking forward to be amazed by the skills of this wonderful baker and enjoy baking her wonderful cakes but I am so disappointed....why call a book Celebration Cakes if cupcakes and cereals bars are included too??? Very few cakes look interesting and they do not look that celebratory. The photos and the styling is quite poor too....such a shame
