These two cables were tested for use with DMX signals. I did not test using audio signals. The connectors and cable are all good quality. I found the (female) 5 pin XLR connectors to be quite tight fitting requiring a little more force than usual to insert and remove, but not overly so. The locking worked fine on all connectors. Inside the connectors the soldering was good, with nice healthy shiny joints. I tested these cables using a DMX controller connected to a single RGBW LED lamp. Everything worked exactly as expected (I tested using a 40 Hz frame rate). Overall these cables were 37cm long, measuring from the tip of one connector to the other. Discounting the pins & sockets I measured 34cm - so that's the maximum distance between two units you could connect. The cable in between the two XLR connectors itself I measured at 23.5cm. The cable diameter is 5.8mm and it appears to be good quality and flexible rubber cable. These cables are good quality, robust and performed exactly as expected - would recommend.

I believe the description stating "ideal for linking audio mixers, equalizers, crossovers, or amplifiers" is a red herring. I understand audio equipment using 5 pin XLR is probably a stereo mic or a specialist mic that requires extra power. These would have their own breakout cable and this cable won't help. I would ignore all mentions of audio equipment. The cable is correctly wired for DMX to swap between 3 pin and 5 pin connectors. The construction is good and, if you open up the connectors, the contacts are accessible making the cables easily repairable. I would consider these DMX cables except, confusingly, the cable used is labelled professional audio / video cable so most likely has an impedance of 50 to 75 ohms rather than the 110 ohms required for DMX. Practically, such short lengths would hopefully not cause significant signal degradation. Priced at £12.34 for two, they're not cheap for a somewhat confused short cable.

DMX ist ein digitales Steuerprotokoll, das für die Steuerung Stecker vom Typ XLR verwendet. Dabei kamen 3- und 5-polige zur Abwendung. Letztere waren Pflicht, erstere wurden zur Kostenersparnis verwendet. Für die Belegung der 3-poligen Stecker ("Messer" in der Studiotechnik genannt) und Buchsen ("Feder" genannt) galt bei DMX: Ein symmetrisches Steuersignal lag mit (+) an 2, mit (-) an 3, und 1 war der Schirm. Das kam vom vorgeschrieben 5-poligen Verbinder, denn dort galt dasselbe: 1 Schirm 2 (+) 3 (-) Nur daß zwei Pole 4 und 5 freiblieben. Aus dem Verkaufstext könnten Audio-Leute (für die eigentlich das XLR-Steckersystem entwickelt war) herauslesen, daß diese Adapter von 3 auf 5 Pole für "Audio" geeignet sind. Das ist aber falsch! Der 3- und 5-polige XLR-Verbinder überträgt ein oder zwei Leitungen Audio. Entweder als Y-Verteiler einen symmetrischen Kanal auf zwei symmetrische Wege. Oder man hat unsymmetrisches Stereo auf 3-poligem XLR und will in eine symmetrische Stereo-Buchse. Und für Stereo-XLR gibt es in der Studiotechnik eine Norm des IRT: Links: 2 ist (+), 3 ist (-) Rechts: 4 ist (+), 5 ist (-) Schirm ist 1 Bei dem hier angebotenen 5-poligen XLR-Verbinder kommt gewissermaßen nur ein Kanal Audio an. Für einen Adapter von 3-polig unsymmetrisch muß man den 5-poligen Verbinder mit Brücken erweitert löten! Am Rande erwähnt: Außerdem wurde bei der DMX-Lichtsteuertechnik der XLR-Verbinder umgekehrt verwendet: In der Audiotechnik fließt das Signal aus dem "Messer" (den Pins). Bei DMX kommt das Signal aus der "Feder" (XLR-Buchse), damit man keinen Schlag bekommt. Analog beim häuslichen Strom, wo der Strom auch nicht aus den "Pins" kommt, sondern anders als bei Audio aus der "Buchse" (den Löchern).
