Can we fill tap water in this ?

Tap water will work fine. For a good amount of time the filter beats they have will keep from anything building up. Will still want to buy something to add to it down the road though.

Is distilled water really necessary ?

I don't know, but maybe if you would use a demineralization cartridge you wouldn't have to use distilled water. Unfortunately, this humidifier came to me broken and I didn't have a chance to give it a try. I bought a Homedics that used regular water with demineralization cartridges and you can use regular water as long as you use these cartridges. They last as long as 30-40 water changes and aren't that expensive.

Will this run continuously or only 12 hours?

I filled with 2 gallons of distilled water and placed on level 2 at 55% humidity and it has been running continuously for 48 hours so far.

My machine keeps randomly beeping throughout it's use, why?

It is probably the fan stoping and starting. I started hearing mine when you reach the set humidity amount it turns off on its own and restarts when the humidity drops.
