Tabi socks, or split-toe socks, have been worn in Japan since the sixteenth century, reaching their peak popularity during the Edo period (1600-1868). They were developed to wear with sandals & wooden clogs called geta. There is a special place for your big toe. Lots of people wear tabi socks: martial artists practicing Aikido or Karate, Taiko drummers, Suzuki actors, and traditional Japanese folk dancers, just to name a few! According to Shiatsu theory, wearing tabi socks benefits the back, the spine, and the digestion due to the acupuncture meridians located between the toes.

Tabis
This was a gift for the same friend I gave the first pair to as well. She has been putting the tabis to good use and she loves them.

The socks constrict your blood flow...
The media could not be loaded. UPDATE: I've determined I can no longer wear these and will be adding them to my fabric Recycling pile for when I go to my local Farmer's Market. Despite my cutting many many interior threads, to try and loosen these, they still leave 'Dig Marks' in my ankles. BTW, for reference, I am 5'2", weigh 110 pounds and wear a Women's 6.5 shoe.++++++++++++++You know... I thought I was imagining things at first... I thought, 'gee, maybe I'm just getting older...and my circulation just isn't what it used to be...and that's why I'm getting 'dig marks' in my ankles from these socks...'So I thought, 'well, maybe I just need to manually stretch these socks out a bit more, to try and accommodate my old feet'. And it finally hit me...as I was trying to stretch out the socks, yet again, and as I was looking at the inside side of the socks/fabric.... I think the problem is that, in trying to create the obviously nice DESIGN of the socks, they had to incorporate all kinds of THREADS which cross-cross all over the socks, which in turn I think inhibits the ability of the socks as a whole, to stretch, or be soft and comfortable on the foot. I think perhaps the stitching, as well, may have been done to tightly. (Maybe there was a way to make this complex design but with a lower 'density' or thread count?)It was only when I came here, now, to see what the other reviews said, that I see I'm not alone. That I'm NOT just 'getting old' and have bad 'circulation' problems! ;-)It's a pity, because the concept of the sock design is very cute...that when your two feet are side-by-side, you see the sun setting over Fuji-san.Watch the video I made (attached to my review), where I show that you in fact need to 'snip' some of the threads inside the sock, in order to make the socks more flexible/less tight....

Fun socks
Fun! A little weird feeling since I'm not used to separated toes, but they have been fun to wear around friends.
