why does it say lead warning on the bottle I received? does it really have lead in it?

The presence of this warning does not mean the product is unsafe. Alternatively, a product without this warning does not necessarily mean the product is safe.

It is important to remember that many of the foods we eat on a daily basis contain very small amounts of heavy metals. Mushrooms, like any other naturally grown ingredients, accumulate heavy metals from the substrate or soil in which they are grown.

California Proposition 65 (CA Prop 65) is an Act in the state of California that mandates virtually all companies selling into the state of California to issue warnings on their products if their products contain chemicals in concentrations that the government of California has deemed may increase the risk of cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

There are over 800 chemicals on the list and the established daily allowable limits are far below what is considered safe by other governing bodies like the FDA or Health Canada.

As a result, many companies are required to issue somewhat arbitrary warnings on products sold in California to avoid legal action against them.

One of the major issues for supplements is lead as CA Prop 65 sets a daily maximum limit of 0.5ppm (parts per million). This is the strictest limit in the entire world.

In contrast, the FDA limit is 25 times higher (12.5 ppm) and the Health Canada limit is 10 times higher (5 ppm).

Just to give you an example how strict these regulations are, one 5oz glass of red wine is typically over the Prop 65 limit for lead.

Coffee is now exempt from Prop 65 but previously any coffee shop in California needed to have a warning on their storefront because coffee contains acrylamide, which is a byproduct of the roasting process and a potential carcinogen. Needless to say, people did not drink less coffee.

As the 5th largest economy in the world, and a large consumer of natural products, California is an important sales channel. While our products meet the Prop 65 guidelines, Real Mushrooms has decided to put a warning on our products to inform our consumers in California and be in complete accordance with California Prop 65.

Where is this product manufactured?

The mushroom extracts are produced in China at a cGMP ISO22000 organic facility. The mushroom products are then imported into the US and sent to our encapsulation facility in California, which is a cGMP, NSF certified, solar-powered facility.
