I bought two folders each, for Lincoln pennies, Jefferson nickels, and Washington quarters for my husband. Now retired, he has some time to work on his coin collection which has not be touched in years. He wanted to replace old Whitman folders that were at least 30 years old with new ones so he could extend his collection and bring it up to date. He stated that the folders were generally acceptable except for the Jefferson nickel folders. The punched holes in the cardboard were slightly undersize making it impossible to insert the nickels with thumb or finger pressure. He had to use a wooden dowel padded on the end in order to force the coins into position. The penny and quarter folders worked as they are supposed to.He wishes to offer a caution to users of this type of coin folder. When transferring some of the coins from the old folders to the new ones, corrosion was observed on the edges. The corrosion was not always evident by looking at the face of the coins. The old coin folders had been stored on a closet shelf, and the house is normally heated and air conditioned. Nevertheless, moisture was absorbed by the cardboard and it was sufficient to react with the copper in the coins. If you intend to be more than just a casual collector, these type of folders are not recommended. Select another type of coin holder that will not allow moisture to come in contact with the coin, especially for long term storage.
