Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), also called Tragant is a papilionaceae in the legume family. Astragalus is one of the 50 most famous plants of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is considered a classic product for strengthening the immune system.
According to studies, parts of this plant species, especially from the roots, can be used successfully against allergies. Scientists study the efficacy at diabetes, cardiac arrest problems, and severe cell abnormalities. Above all the root is suitable for processing and shows the whole spectrum of effects. Astragalus is generally well tolerated and no side effects are known.
Astragalus acts primarily as an antioxidant and protects the cells from external influences and strengthens immune defense. In laboratory tests, the stimulant effect on the immune system and the increase in antibody production could be demonstrated.
While the effect of the medicinal plant in the West is new, it has been documented in China since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). In animal experiments, many effects have already been demonstrated. Studies with humans have been conducted, but most of the effects are based on the traditions of traditional Chinese natural medicine.
