Can they be used to mount lights on a vertical or other non-horizontal bar of the correct diameter?

There doesn’t seem to be any real limit. They clamp tight to the 2” bar, so Angle shouldn’t matter. My only concern would be if you are using the rubber inserts to clamp to a 1” pipe, the clamp might want to roll off of the rubber, if the weight/twist was too great. I would install the mount and the tank/pull/twist on it to see if it will hold.

Will this work with square cross bars?

Yes. The rubber inserts have some give to it and will grip onto the corners of the cross bar once you tighten the mounts together. The bar must be square. Rectangular cross bars do not work as well due to the difference in contact pressure each corner received. Hope this helps.

Will it fit on square tuding?

Not properly. Won't even clamp down on a cylinderical bar good
