A Guide to the Zohar

Excellent Introduction to Zohar: Pritzker Ed.
This introduction is a well written and scholastic overview of the Zohar. I was satisfied that I was given plenty of information to better understand the history of the Zohar. I feel that I have enough information in the references to do further research if I choose to do so. I am reading Vol. 1 of the Pritzker Editions and having read the "Guide" I feel confident as I continue my study of the Zohar using Matt's work and even other Kabbalah writings.I recommend Green's Guide especially to those like myself who have little knowledge of the Zohar and the Kabbalah traditional writings. I think it is also a worthy vol. for those more experienced and informed in such studies. I think Green proves himself a learned scholar. To me it was well written and easy to read.

Clear in some respects, very conjectural and ungrounded in others
Some parts of this book are wonderful such as the introduction to the Sefirot while others such as the author asserting that the Zohar and kabbalah arose as a response to Christianity in Medieval Spain are mere conjecture. Certainly his arguments are valid, but when something is mere theory you don't present it as fact which he does over and over again thereby confounding the reader not allowing him or her to actually encounter the Zohar on it's own terms. He doesn't consider other salient possibilities which I can't be bothered to extrapolate here.

Good but not a guide.
Not so much a guide to Sefer Ha-Zohar, more of a history and opinions of the work.

Not easy subject but - a lot of great insight
This book is another solid book by Arthur Green. He takes a kind of neutral, here is what the Zohar says, and this is what it means approach ... but he neither commits himself to it, or against it. The Zohar isn't an easy thing to get your head around, but I think Arthur has nailed it. There is enough here to keep those with academic interest pleased, and those with spiritual interest will also find value. Valuable addition to my books on the Zohar.
