Assuming it is one and the same book (and seems to be from publication date), this is a fascinating book for anyone who wants the FEEL of those ruined towns and villages of 1914-18 France & Belgium (BEF sectors only). Yes, the photos are B & W and show static ruins and knocked out equipment, not battle. Yes, there is only one rather limited map. Yes, the text is very 1938 and pretty minimal. But that's half the charm of it. It was produced by people who had been there for others who had too, but hadn't taken photos. If you can find it, there was also a much bigger 3-4 vol set called "The Western Front 20 Years On", which is so detailed we get literally every village, farm and landscape from the Somme to Ypres.

With the Centennial of the First World War approaching, this book presents an important thumbnail of a conflict almost lost in history, yet one that left the world changed and set the stage for a troubled century. Readers will enjoy both the photographs and the descriptive text that chronicles a war that decimated much of a young generation.
