Hydroclay must be installed at the bottom of the vivarium and covered with a fine mesh to avoid mixing substrates (Terra Mesh or similar),then covered with an acidic substrate such as peat (Terrarium Peat), coconut humus (Terrarium Humus) or smaller clay beads (Repticlay). This substrate is used to degrade wastes and improve the biotope, the vivarium being an artificial set-up where plants and animals need to find their natural bioclimatic environment. The porous structure of Hydroclay enables the development of beneficial bacteria that degrade wastes. This substrate also empowers you to create a natural vivarium requiring as little care as possible. Moreover, a clay covering greatly decreases odors in the terrarium. It is an extraordinary filtratium medium: 4 Hydroclay bags create a living surface for bacteria that is as large as a football field. Addind a pump and a tube to bring water back up, you can create an aqua terrarium (see schematic). Hydroclay filters water and prevents clogging of the pump. Beneficial bacteria colonize the drainage substrate. Certain bacteria can degrade excrements or plant residues. Bacteria are instrumental in the cycling of nutrients in the ground and are involved in nitrogen fixation. They are therefore important to keep the soil fertile in your vivarium. With Hydroclay, bacteria will be abundant around the plant roots and live in symbiosis with them.
