Purchase of the year.
I recently ended up with a $900 electric bill thanks to a week of 110 degree days in sunny California, so I decided to look into some alternatives to running central air all day. This little guy seemed to be the most well-reviewed out of all the options for portable air conditioners even though it still had an overall 3.6 rating, but I decided to give it a try. Having tested it out, I gotta say it actually works better than expected and I think some of the negative reviews have had issues for easily avoidable reasons. 1) This is not made to cool an entire room. That's not the point of it. This is for someone who wants to cool down their bed while they're sleeping or set it on their desk to cool down while they're working or maybe place in a corner of the kitchen while cooking. Basically, it's for when you're spending a lot of time in roughly the same spot and don't necessarily need to cool down your entire house. 2) it doesn't work wonders for the first 20 minutes or so. The water needs to soak through the filter cartridge because the water evaporating in a (ideally) dry climate is the science behind cooling the air. Until that happens it's basically just a little box fan. I get the impression some reviewers tested it out for 5 minutes, concluded it doesn't work, and wrote their review. Give it at least 20 minutes and you should definitely notice that it's pushing out air a good 8-10ish degrees cooler than the room temp is. 3) because this relies on water evaporating, it works better in drier climates. If you're in California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc this will work great. If you're in a humid place like Florida, you should frankly leave. 4) Based on what some have mentioned in terms of its air pushing capabilities, it seems like they maybe don't realize there are multiple settings. At its lowest setting I would say they're right: you basically need to have it within 12 inches of you to even notice it's on. However it has 4 settings that you cycle through by pushing the button on top (and there are no other buttons, it's pretty fool-proof). I think the 2nd setting is probably what most people would use while sitting it on their desk or beside their bed (higher settings might actually make you cold at that proximity). At its highest setting it's a bit noisy (like a PC fan at full speed), but I think it would actually be sufficient to cool a *small* bedroom at that level. If you have something like a 10×10 space or smaller and you don't have high ceilings, this might actually work for cooling the entire room at its highest setting. In a larger space, however, just remember this is made to cool you down while having it a few feet from you, not on the opposite end of where ever you are. I just did a little test and you can feel a cool breeze from 8 feet away at its highest setting. Beyond that you probably won't notice much effect. Also, I didn't notice this when I bought it, but it plugs in using a USB cord so you can power it with your computer or plug it into a power bank and take it on the go. It also only uses 7.5 watts which is literally 3,492.5 watts fewer than the average Central air system. That's not a joke or a typo. On a related note, I've seen some claim the price ($79 as of writing) is a bit steep, but consider that for anyone who works from home or stays in the same area for large parts of the day, this will allow you to kick the thermostat up a few degrees without sweating through your shirt, and then you'll save pretty substantially on each electric bill. It can pay for itself in one billing cycle if you let it, and after that it's actually costing you money not to have one. Overall, I'm perfectly satisfied with this purchase and it actually performs better than reviews had led me to believe. Just remember it's made to cool a roughly 10×10 area or smaller, not your entire estate. If you're ok with that, you'll love it.

False advertising
Doesn’t cool a small car nor a small space. It’s cool for the 1 foot direction it blows. Far from a chill portable air conditioner. Words mean things, it’s rather a cool air blower for direct cooling needs up to 12 inches away from the air flow only.

Needs a dry and hot environment - but if you have the right conditions, it works well
This is a great little device but it's important to understand a few things. I wrote this review because I saw some high marks and some low, and I wanted to try to explain why there may be such a difference. It's all about using it in the right conditions. Check your local weather. The lower the humidity in your home / area, the better. If you have a nest or other smart thermostat, you can check the humidity level in your home, which is even better. If you're 60% humidity or higher, it probably won't work well. 40% or lower, and it will work very well. 40%-60% you'll get some minor cooling action. 1- it is a swamp cooler. It's not a new concept - they've existed before air conditioners, but if you're not familiar with them, do a quick search and spend some time reading about it. I'll note - there are many cheaper ones on Amazon that may work just as well, but this only appeared to be much higher quality and looks like it could almost be an Apple product. 2-if you did you research, you'll see that they're only effective in hot and dry environments - so good for desert or Mediterranean climates, which is the US is mostly in the South West. In hot humid environments, it can actually make you feel hotter, by adding additional humidity to the air, and the cooling affect is mitigated. 3-this is a personal cooling device, meaning you'l only notice it if it's blowing directly on you, it it not going to cool a room unless you're standing in a closet! Keep in mind, it uses less energy than a light bulb and is powered by a USB cord - so don't expect it to work like an AC. The laws of physics are still in play - cooling air takes a lot of energy. This unit uses 7.5 watts, of about 10% of what a light bulb uses, an AC may use 1200 watts. The benefit here is that it costs virtually nothing to run and does not require a vented exhaust, like as AC unit. On it's lowest speed, it is also nearly quiet, but it is a bit louder than idea when on high. 4-with that said, if you do live in a warm and dry climate, it works nicely. I work from home and find that if I keep it blowing on me directly during the day, I don't need to pay to cool my entire house, or I can at least turn up the thermostat to 78-80, and still feel like it is 72. This allows me to easily justify the cost of this little cube, even at $100. 5-pay attention to the dimensions - it's about half the size of a show box, so again, don't expect this to cool a bed room.

It's not bad, just set realistic expectations
I got this because one of the rooms in my house doesn't get great A/C and sits at 81 degrees making it horrible to sleep in. I live in a humid climate which makes these machines struggle. I knew this going in, and I also knew that this is NOT an air conditioner. A true air conditioner has coolant, a compressor, and heat exhaust. This works by evaporating water, which really needs a dry climate. I coupled this with a small dehumidifier and it definitely helps. This device does indeed output a cool breeze. It is not "cold", but it's definitely chilly and when it's pointed at my bed it does solve the problem. I don't think it cools the room down, maybe 2 or 3 degrees, but in the path of the air flow, its very cool and has made it so much easier to fall asleep. Because I live in a humid climate, I paired this with a small dehumidifier which helps a lot. This unit evaporates water into the air, and the dehumidifier pulls it out. It's not an efficient system, but it's a low-profile method that does fix my problem. My only complaint is this is too expensive. I think $60 would be a very fair price. It's genuinely well designed but it is thin plastic and if you tilt it even a little bit it will spill some water. It's built well on the outside and they definitely thought about the user when designing it. It's very simple and intuitive to use. It's also VERY quiet. You can toggle the air flow strength. It's virtually silent on the lowest setting and pretty loud on the highest setting, but it moves a LOT of air on the highest setting. I can't speak to it's longevity yet. It's made of plastic and I've read other review saying the internals can get fried. I've only had it for 4 days so I don't know. A full tank of water lasts about 6 hours on a medium setting and it will definitely cool you down. I am happy with it so far, but I did go into this knowing that it wasn't going to be blasting cold air. It's a nice cool breeze that, if pointed directly at you, will cool you down pretty well. I just wish it were $30-40 cheaper.

Works well as a personal unit!
Bought last night to survive a heat wave near Seattle with no air con. I wasn't sure if it would work in my area, since we were at 60% humidity-- Swamp coolers don't work well in high humidity areas, and I didn't know if that was too high. I have a small room thermometer that was reading 82F in my room at 10pm when I was getting ready to go to sleep. Placed the evachill on my headboard and let it do its thing for an hour, then placed the thermometer in front of it. It read 75F, plenty cool for sleeping. Actually got cold in the night (didn't measure then) and had to grab a blanket. Literally when it gets this hot at night, I usually sleep in a tent in the yard. I think I won't have to anymore, this is great! I'm not seeing anything close to 25 degrees cooler as claimed, but I do live in an area of decent humidity. I would not be surprised if it performs even better in arid environments. I would say though, have reasonable expectations for <$100 unit-- this only cools about 3 feet directly in front of it. Put it on your desk or headboard, you will feel it and it will make a difference. Expect it to cool a room or two people sitting in different directions, it's just not made for that.

Great bedside fan
Update....dropping down to 3 stars because after a year the fan is unusable as a bedside fan. The first problem I had was the fan control just stopped. Further investigation shows an issue with one of the pcb traces. I fixed that and it worked for a while until the noises started. A rattle developed somewhere in the fan making it unusable for a bed fan. Also... Evapolar has poor quality control of the replacement media. 50/50 chance you'll get a good one or one that smells like feet. The product is an excellent concept, but lacks in reliability. I always thought the desktop evap coolers were gimmicky, and they mostly are, until I saw this one that actually uses media and not just a soaked sponge/mister. Remember, this is NOT an air conditioner. Performance and efficiency will depend on your environmental conditions. You can only cool down the the wet bulb temp, but it's not 100% efficient so it'll be a few degrees above. Positives: - Design and Build quality on this are excellent. The unit looks good and is well thought out.... This the price. - Noise -- this is by far the most quiet of any fan I tried. That are no annoying rattles or motor harmonic. Just the sound of the fan which has a pleasant white noise sound at all speeds. - No mist, true evap design. This will eliminate any "white dust" that comes with the low cost desktop coolers. Negatives: - I wish the water tank was slightly larger, at speed 2 I get about 5 hours. I'd like one hour more. - the louvers are very loose and may not stay in position at higher fan speeds. All in all a great purchase and I will be buying more to replace other fans in the house. Yes it is more expensive but I personally think it well worth the cost for the quality.

Overall, a horrible product & way too overpriced
I bought this little cooler for my cats, I used it a total of 3xs. Each time I used it, i added water & not 10 min in to having it on the water was everywhere. It soaked the mat it was on, the area where it connects to the power cord was completely wet! I figured I may have overfilled it so I tried it again- NOPE! same issue. I had it on a flat surface, monitored it (I thought maybe my cats had messed with it), put maybe a1/2 cup of water in it & it leaked everywhere. I did notice the filter too was questionable- when I received the package I had to take of the little plastic coverings & noticed the filter was a brown paper material & it shed when I touched it. Im not sure if its a recycled or ecofriendly material but it looked used & for $100 it was def not the quality I expected. The air flow had 3-4 settings & it was decent & had good blowing strength but overall, a horrible product & way too overpriced.

Keeps hamster corner fresh
Our desktop breeze box placed next to my hamster cage. It never blows hard bt enough to keep things feeling airy in the corner where it gets stuffy.
