Moved into a new home and need a manual for the thermostat. How can I tell what model it is when they all look alike?

you can pull the thermostat off the wall, much as you can to program it in an easy chair. Inside you will find a serial number, usually beginning with 'tcont8' or something like that.

is there a way to not have the backlight on all the time?

Yes , I believe its a fix in he 'installer' options. Before changing to the Prestige IAQ , we had these in our own home...the backlight was only on when the touchscreen was activated.

does it display the outside temperature?

According to the installation manual for the Honeywell TH8110 and the Trane TCONT800AS11AA "OPTIONAL OUTDOOR OR INDOOR REMOTE SENSOR. AVAILABLE ON SELECT MODELS. WIRES MUST HAVE A CABLE SEPARATE FROM THE THERMOSTAT CABLE".

Is there a substitute version of this with fewer features? I am looking for a simple "set the target" for heating and for cooling.

There isn't. But you can put this model in 'non-program' mode and get the operation you are looking for very easily.
