The Complete Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Trilogy of Five : Adams, Douglas, Fry, Stephen, Freeman, Martin: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Why haven't i already read this? - So I've reached the age of 42 without ever reading the book, seeing the film or the series of hitchhikers guide. Two friends in work were using lines out of it a month back. Lines such as I know where my towel is and the answer to everything is 42. My age coincidentally. So I asked them what they were on about and they told me. They were as shocked as me that I hadn't ever seen or read it what with me being a Sci fi fan. I don't know how I bypassed it really. Anyway, so I bought the books that night and I'm glad I did. I'm only two books in and I have read the reviews on here that say they go downhill after the 2nd but I honestly feel I've already had my moneys worth from the first two. Whilst it's not laugh out loud funny all the time, I have had moments where I laughed. What I found is it is constantly amusing, a smirk or a chuckle has only ever been a page away. But by far the best quality to these books is the ideas they present, page after page of a most unique and interesting galaxy where fantastic and credible futuristic visions of how the wider universe could be living as we speak are explained in a humorous and fascinating way. This coupled with the ridiculous, mind boggling crazy ideas that he throws into the mix had me flicking pages for more time than I should on a night before early work. Totally recommend the first two in the series and despite the criticisms I am still looking forward to reading the rest. Review: The first installation in an epic series! - Having started watching Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on Netflix, I found myself wanting to re-read this awesome book! The first installation in the epic series follows the four eventual crew members of the starship Heart of Gold: Arthur Dent - Dent is a human from the planet Earth. Arthur's home is due to be bulldozed by the local council. Little does he know that, simultaneously, the entire Earth is about to be bulldozed for a hyperspatial express route, by the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council. Ford Prefect - Ford is from a 'small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.' On Earth (Where he was stranded for 15 years) he imitated being an out-of-work actor. In reality, he is a roving researcher for the book, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Zaphod Beeblebrox - Zaphod is the (two-headed, three-armed) President of the Imperial Galactic Government. A title that he surrendered when he stole the Improbability Drive protype ship (i.e. Heart of Gold). He is also a "semi-cousin" of Ford Prefect. Trillian (Tricia McMillan) - Trillian is a Hitchhiker from Earth (like Arthur Dent, she is also human). She has a degree in maths and another in astrophysics. She met Zaphod at a fancy dress party. However, we mustn't forget Marvin! A manic depressive 'Genuine People Personalities' prototype robot, who is also aboard Heart of Gold. All in all, a fabulous series that I know I'll read again and again ... and again and again and again and again and again.

The first installation in an epic series!

Absolutely mindbogglingly amazeingly mind-blowing
There are already 5 prologues in this book which provide a wonderful insight into all five of the books of the trilogy of five by the Magnificent Douglas Adams which will provide a better insight into the five books better than I could ever 'review' them here especially as they had known him personally themselves too. But I can without a shadow of a doubt say that this series of books are one of the best that I have ever read and as long as you can get behind the unique wonderful world of Mr Adams and his highly entertaining style of writing then there is no doubt in my mind at all that you will enjoy this very much as many millions have done so before you. There is a reason that this was a best-seller in many countries and many languages and through reading this along with the antics of Ford, Arthur, Tricia and others you will understand exactly why and no doubt be swept away by a rollercoaster of planets in a world never before uncovered. The only thing that makes me sad now is that there aren't more books and Mr Adams is no longer with us. I will never have the chance to explore his magnificent world further other than where my own imagination would lead me, but after reading these books it somewhat feels like that maybe that's what he wanted. Thank you Douglas Adams for all the joys and imaginations your books have brought me.

This is one of the best books ever written. It is science-fiction, funny (typically British humor), inspiring and engaging. It contains lots of philosophical musings, as well as thoughts about politics, psychology, and you name it - but is always light hearted. Meanwhile, in my humble opinion, the author catches important truths in these funny and easy-to-read stories. You will learn who made the earth and why, how the most firendly and innocent people may turn out to be the most dangerous, who really rules the universe, and much more. Don't miss the description of the economy of the first people on earth.
