The Life and Passion of William of Norwich (Penguin Classics)

An elegant, scholarly and immensely enjoyable book.
This is a new translation of a classic medieval text, the hagiography of William of Norwich, penned by a Benedictine monk in the local cathedral priory. Besides offering a wealth of insights into life in 12th century England, it also chronicles the first modern instance of the accusation of the ritual murder of a Christian child by Jews, what was to become known as the Blood Libel.Miri Rubin, one of the most noted scholars on this historical period, provides an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the text, the historical background, as well as the detailing the significance of Thomas of Monmouth's story on the subsequent history of Jewish persecution.Although I do not read Latin, I have read the original 1896 translation and Rubin's update is far more accessible. The addition of a great many informative footnotes is also extremely helpful. An elegant, scholarly and immensely enjoyable book.

Understanding Medieval Anti-Semitism
An excellent forward of the issues raised by the original text, supplemented the clear translation of Thomas' text. For those wanting to understand the basis of Medieval anti-Semitism and to appreciate the various "miracles" assigned to an English "martyr" this is a book not to be missed.
