The put the seams on the sides of your head instead of down the middle which eliminates the pressure point on the top of your head. The mask is a mesh which is easy to breath through. The material does wick moisture but it is not the same as no balaclava. The point is to add a layer of protection for you helmet lining and ease the donning and doffing of the helmet. Much more difficult to clean your helmet liner than the balaclava. I did find the glasses holes to be to small to be useful.
