Great film
We love this movie and generally watch it every couple of years. It is showing its age now, but to us, it's a thrill every time we watch it. Had a copy which I loaned to someone and never got back so had to buy another one - I won't be lending this one out!

Eerie film based on true events.
I read on the DVD cover what the film was about generally, the fact that it is based on 'true events' and that there was a good cast of main actors and support roles and that sold it to me. This is the 3rd or 4th film starring Richard Gere that I have watched inside a fortnight ( Arbitrage, Nights in Rodanthe among others and both recommended) implies I am a real fan of his but I'm not particularly that's the odd thing about it. True events in the '60s in Point Pleasant, West Virginia where people begin having dreams, hallucinations and otherworldly experiences concerning 'Mothman', a Moth-like figure with human face whose sighting or 'visitation' preempt's a tragedy, normally of mass proportions. Gere is a reporter, John Klein, whose wife dies as a result of a tragic vehicle accident, involving 'Mothman'. This drives Gere onto make investigations when he discovers drawings his wife made shortly before her death. Don't wish to give away too much of the film. A good screenplay and direction and use of some quite eerie locations, apart from Gere, stars Debra Messing, Will Patton and Laura Linney who formed such an excellent pairing with Gere in Primal Fear - excellent crime movie, acting honours though to Edward Norton I reckon.

This is more than a "disaster premonition" movie.
Richard Gere is excellent in this movie. His performance nearly reduced me to tears.Despite the story being a bit slow the film grabs and holds you.It is all allegedly fact-based on people's premonitions and prophecies made by a strange and evil being. But under a pretty straightforward "disaster premonition" surface there is a lot more going on. The movie is full of subtle clues about the nature of the "Mothman" and gives just a hint of what a creature like that may really want with us.What is the most important thing in a human's life? Why would the creature, who has all the signs of being evil, want to warn people? Would you pick up a phone call from your dead wife? Is there anything looking after us in "God works in mysterious ways" style? These are just the few question the movie attempts to answer.I think the essence of the film is expressed by one of the characters (excellent piece of acting too!): "We are not meant to know". And everyone has to make his or hers own choice in life based on own judgement.

Intriguing Supernatural Film
I do like a good supernatural film and when browsing my recommendations here on Amazon this caught my attention. It is supposedly based on a true story and events that happened in the late 60's. For me it was an interesting movie, but it doesn't really have any real substance as the story unfolds there seems to be a mish-mash of different supernatural events where there seems at one point prophecies, the next psychic events to more demonic happenings and this can confuse and lose the narrative or the purpose of the story. I did enjoy the film and I am still glad I purchased the film but I can understand why it is not considered a more popular movie. If you like a supernatural, like Richard Gere and take the film as a light intrigue then yes it is worth a watch.

Mothmen Prophecies
The Mothmen Prophecies is a film based on real events and Richard Gere stars in it. I watched this years ago when it came out and enjoyed it then. It is a slow burner chiller thriller and is well above average. The old dvd release had a documentary as a bonus feature with it which is well checking out if you can find it as it is almost more creepy than the film. The mothmen occur when disasters are about to occur and appear as an ill omen. I found this generally creepy when tied in with the documentary as a lot of people seemed very spooked about what had happened and did not want to talk about it even years later. It’s a good film and has some great actors in it and I could recommend as a chiller thriller but read up on the background to the film and it moves up a notch. Enjoy !

Eerie and disturbing
The Mothman Prophecies is based on the book of the same name by paranormal investigator John Keel. In my opinion the director, Mark Pellington, has done a fantastic job of cherry picking the most interesting parts of the book for this superb film. The story is set in a small town in West Virginia where a series of increasingly bizarre events took place. Richard Gere plays reporter John Klein who has recently lost his wife Mary to a brain tumor. He finds somehow himself in West Virginia and becomes engrossed in the happenings. This is a complex film which explores life after death, pre-cognitive ability and even extra terrestrials. The Mothman is barely sighted in the film which makes the story more credible. Laura Linney puts in a fantastic performance as Connie, the Town Policewoman who refuses to be intimidated by the Mothman or the weird going-ons. There is a real sense of paranoia, confusion and fear as the story unfolds. Definitely worth a second viewing.

Little of substance
I wanted to see if a film could be as spooky as the 'original' Mothman incidents around Point Pleasant. Instead, the film producers/director decided to concentrate on Richard Gere (cardboard) centralised performance. Most of the content from the MP was disregarded, over a hundred or so incidents and what was left would not have been used in the X-files. I had to rewind a few times to see the said 'Mothman' or men and again it was vague viseral stuff. In my opinion, dont expect alot from this take on the Mouthmen incidents...go watch the original documentary.
