Great tamper
So I've been tamping regular style for years....decades maybe. Never really been an issue. Get it level more often than not. After watching James Hoffman do his regular puck prep I saw he used a similar sprung loaded tamper. £170 mind.....bit rich for my blood. So went for this one as a bit of a treat for myself as well as an IMS basket.I have to say I love this tamper. Beautifully built and a pleasure to use.

Unimpressive, But Effective
I'll be honest; If I'd had to pay for this, I probably wouldn't have gotten it. In terms of quality this thing is top-notch, with a smooth spring action and perfectly polished handle. Every espresso I make with this comes out great, with a smooth and level puck. I have no complaints really, but the fact that this is ~60$ is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. This is not to say that I don't think the price is justified, its just that there are so many other options that probably do the job just as well, for half the price. If you're planning on being one of those espresso-making Tiktok channels and showing off your skills then maybe this is the tamper for you, otherwise I'd probably recommend going cheaper and getting the same results. All that said I cannot really give this less than a 5/5, since it does deliver in terms or quality, just know that doesn't mean I fully recommend this product.

Empfehlenswert!

Works amazing under pressure.
Ok, so, this tamper is beyond impressive.I don't know what I was expecting -- the goal of doing a cold review of this was to see just how well it did its job on at a quick prep pace. Let me tell you, it blew my mind. The tamper is solid -- it doesn't feel like it's falling apart while holding, much less using. It has a great little cover for it too.It comes with two additional springs, but I went ahead and used it as it was sent, which was the second spring mid-poundage for the tamper. Using it, you could feel how the grounds were being compressed and the results speaks for itself, you'll notice in the shots that accompanies this that the grounds were very loosely placed -- after, it's tighter than my pants after a Thanksgiving meal. You'll notice the puck is pretty intact, no breaking up whatsoever. And after removing the puck, you can see how the unit's ability to compress is so good, the puck didn't even fracture. So, get yourself this tamper, because it doesn't disappoint, and neither will your brew.

Great tamper, great looks too
Normcore makes generally good stuff for espresso/coffee addicts. This one's no different. This is essentially a variant of their V4 tamper. My process generally involves grinding the beans into the portafilter, then a WDT tool, followed by a palm distributor that rotates and evens out the grounds somewhat, finally being tamped down before putting a puck screen on.I first started with the included Breville tamper which does an okay job. Then I had a calibrated tamper that did not self-level. That one did a better job but it counted on me being able to perfectly hold it level, plus its spring would feel scratchy. When I switched to this Normcore V4 tamper, it was night and day better. The included spring of 25lbs is what I've stuck with, even though it comes with15 and 30lb options. The packaging is good and it has a tiny one/two pager that explains the parts and how to replace springs. After I had distributed the grounds, I put the V4 tamper on. As one pushes down on the handle, the outer rim sits on the edges of the portafilter and levels the tamper. The inner portion / spring continues moving the flat base down until it touches the puck and compacts it perfectly and level. I usually repeat the process another time to make sure there are no stray grounds around the edge but there generally aren't. The puck screen then goes on without having to be pushed down (since everything is nice and level).I've had very good and more consistent extractions using this as my tamper. The PVD coating in black not only makes this look nice (attractive wood finish handle as well), but also prevents grounds from sticking to its base after the tamp.
