Finding Joseph I: The HR From Bad Brains Documentary [DVD]

A wonderful insight into the legendary HR, Joseph I
I witnessed the force that was the Bad Brains six or seven times in and around London from 1983 until 1989. I also had all the vinyls back then (including Human Rights vinyls on Olive Tree records). Joseph I, was possibly the most intense performer that I ever had the pleasure of seeing. And as I went to two or three gigs a week between those years, that's quite a statement. Bad Brains fell off of my radar by 1990, so I was unaware of the second part of this excellent documentary. In fact I learned a lot from the first half! I had no idea about Bad Brains, music or otherwise, in the 1990's or beyond, and I knew nothing of Joseph I's mental issues. I'm glad that he seems to be more settled with the help of his friends. This documentary is well worth watching, lots of rare footage. Joseph I, really is a living legend, and an inspiration to me back in the 1980's.

Rastaman in babylonFootage of the man himself and lots of interviews with people some of whom make inferences that his sanity is questionable with the evidence that he doesn't trust chris blackwell (island records) or he got into a fight with someone in the beastie boys or that he doesn't like people getting their faces bloodied at his gigs anymore, or that he gives away his money or reads the bible on stage or dresses funny or hear voices 'in the spiritual realm'His love flows through his illness said Ras Michael (or something like that)HAIL THE KING OF ENGLAND

Really moving. I could see both his freedom and his struggle.I relate to much of how he is myself being autistic and a natural anarchist unable to fit into the synthetic world that is dictated to us <3
