A Wonderful Book
I gave The Children's Nurse a five star rating because l found it uplifting to read of the dedication, hard work and commitment of children's nurses like Susan Macqueen. They often sublimate their own needs to those of their patients. It highlights also, what fantastic work is carried out by the dedicated staff at Great Ormond Street hospital.I loved reading every page, and the only thing l disliked was that it had to come to an end! This book would appeal to a wide variety of people, particularly parents of children who have had to be hospitalised. Also, both retired and currently working, medical and nursing staff everywhere. As an ex-nurse, l could relate to many things Susan discussed regarding the many pressures of the job. It makes you realise also how medical science has moved on since the time Susan worked as a children's nurse, but also what can be learnt from revisiting those times regarding the very standards of hygiene and discipline.

Delightful memorable
This book is easy to read a real page turner. A really must read for those considering working in the nursing profession.A really must read for those older folk who were in hospital as children when Matrons we're on the prowl ,Health ministers should read this book to find out how hospitals work and how hard and nurses work and just how much responsibility they have.,No I'm not and never have been a nurse but as. a child I spent time in hospital and this book brought back memories.A delightful funny sad book tastefully written by an ex nurse .Loved it so beautifully written a really good read

An inspiring read
This book is a fascinating account of life as a nurse from the 1960s and examining how nursing has changed over twenty years. This is powerful storytelling at its best. Some of the stories are heartwarming while others are heartbreaking and the book is punctuated with numerous comedic moments. Wholeheartedly recommend this book. Am hoping there will be a follow up book as the story finishes in the 1980s!

Excellent read
Probably biased as I purchased the book as I knew and worked with the author. Really enjoyed reminiscing through the pages. A very good account of nursing as it was ( and I think as it should be)

Great book
A wonder trip down memory lane. Recognised so many people and situations. Susan was only a few years ahead of me and I had the privilege of being one of her students. A wonderful book to read just before our Jan '74 set 40th anniversary reunion. Have recommended it to the girls. But anyone interested in life as nurse in the good old days would love this book. Thank you

Historical perspectives
Interesting story about how nursing/healthcare used to be; there were very many similar practices to what we did in the USA. Worth the read.

Well written and fond memories!
This book brought back fond memories of being a post-basic RSCN student working on the Infectious Diseases ward, with Sue Macqueen as my ward sister in 1979. I learned much from Sue, and of caring for sick children and working as a team of nurses. The time at GOS was wonderful. Thanks Sue!

Memories!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, an excellent historical perspective of nursng half acentury ago.I was a student nurse with Susan Macqueen at Addenbrooks hospital, 1963 - 1966. I am the Marion (nee Garratt) mentioned in the chapter about her life at Addenbrooks....sharing a flat with her in Bateman Street.Susan and I also took a holiday to Austria together, probably in 1964. Sadly, I lost touch with her, although we met up once in London for coffee, probably 20 years ago.I would love to reconnect and go down memory lane.

sad in places and humorous in others
Over 40 yrs ago Susan Mcqueen was the sister on a ward treating our first son (who sadly died) The book is exactly what i would have expected informative, warm, sad in places and humorous in others. Great job.
