I used this mill on a Husqvarna with about 53cc's and ended up buying a big Stihl with 65 cc's and quite a bit more horsepower. The mill worked with the Husqy, but it really worked hard. With the Stihl it slices through logs like butter. **Q: will it fit stihl 290** A: Yes it will fit the 290 and you could mill lumber with that saw and an aggressive chain. I do think you would want a more powerful saw though. I have a Husqvarna with about the same power as the 290 and went out and bought a bigger Stihl just to make the milling process easier. **Q: Will it fit a stihl ms271?** A: It should. The device is set up to use the 2 bolts on the chain adjustment.
