Is this a great algae for a beginner algaculturist?

Hi CW. I think the best and most rewarding for color and longevity is the nannochloropsis. The Chlorella will sink as it grows, spirulina floats- this means that you will need to shake them at least once to several times a day. Nannochloropsis is small and has a very large negative cell surface charge that repels cells from touching each other, clumping and falling out of suspension.   They grow very fast, in my salt solution there is a lot of carbon as bicarbonate to support a density of cells that could reach 1g dry weight per liter. That said they all work well and are super cool. Having them at your desk will make your colleagues think you are smarter, and members of the opposite sex will find you more attractive.   

is it ok to use distilled water and not drinking water since the drinking water we have here contains chloride ?

Hi George,Chloride is found in just about every source of water.  It is necessary for algal growth.  Chlorine on the other hand is bad for algae (thus the no-tap-water specification).  I like bottled drinking water because it is generally sterile and is a great starting point for a new culture.  Distilled water will have very few minerals in it, it is essentially only H2O.  That said, it is OK to use distilled water, as the salt and nutrient kit I provide will add all of the macro and micro nutrients that the algae will need to grow.Matthew-  AlgaeResearchSupply.com

Chlorella is often genetically modified to get high levels of oil where if you nitrogen limit Nanno you can easily get between 15 to 25% lipids by ash for you dry weigh you can easily get between 15 to 25% lipids by  dry weight.
