Works well as advertised
The direct-to-laptop USB-C works well with the Apple M3 chip in the newer MacBook Air.

Compatibility
Didn't work on my computer. My computer is not compatible with it. I guess it is a good item.

Reads the disc but then shuts down
I bought this drive for the simple purpose of listening to and importing audio cds into my music library. When I first load the disc it does recognize the cd and the album information will appear. Then if I try to play or import the cd it freezes up on the first track before shutting down completely. I have to unplug the drive and plug it back in just to be able to eject the disc. It is just a paperweight.Avoid purchasing this terrible product to save yourself some frustration!

Way overpriced for the build quality and basic function.
I'm using this to play through different DVDs and CDs at home and at work. It works just fine, but the quality is just not there for the price at the time of ordering (39.99 US).The good is that it does work with both MacOS and Windows 10/11. Later, I'll check another home desktop running Ubuntu for compatibility. It also does play DVDs and CDs just fine. It includes a USB-C to USB-A 3.1 adapter that I'm using for my desktop computer.Loading a CD and DVD is alright, but it feels a little off. The plastic housing feels far away from the opening and is extremely rough. It feels very unfinished. When sometimes pushing in a CD/DVD, it can rub on the unfinished surface of the plastic, which feels like it might scratch the media. From the pictures and price, I would have also thought that what I would have received would have been a metal housing, not plastic. Because it is plastic, the opening also tends to bend extremely easy. When picking it up, I can feel it bend. When moving it, it bends. If any weight is put on top, the whole top bends down and inward. It just doesn't feel of good quality.By comparison, I have a better known brand external DVD/CD drive (burner) at work. It feels better and is mechanically more stable. It also cost less.Overall, it does work. It's just really cheap feeling quality all around, especially for the price. I would not order or recommend based on that. If it was a fourth of the price, then yes.

Took multiple attempts to get it to connect when inserting a disc.
Unfortunately, the unit I received was defective. It accepted a disc after being plugged in, but the drive kept making a clicking sound and the disk did not mount on my Mac. I ejected the disc, unplugged the drive, and tried again. Clicking noise and no mounting. Tried a third time and it finally mounted. Used that disc for a while and then tried another disk. The 2nd disc would not mount the first time. Hardware is just really unreliable which is shame because a USB-C Drive that's styled after the official SuperDrive is a great idea.

If you still have discs around...
I admit that I still have discs around my office - backed-up data, CDs, DVDs, and more. This play is an inexpensive way to play/access those discs. I tested this with data discs, burned data discs, commercial CDs, burned CDs, commercial DVDs, burned DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs, and it played all of them. I also used it to burn data onto a disc and that worked fine, and I could read the data off the disc after; however, I did not try burning multiple formats. So, this drive does what it needs to for me.If you still need to read discs, this unit will get the job done.
